Biography

Isaac HITCHCOCK (c1779-1855): m'd 1798 Elizabeth WHEELER; new documentation confirms that Isaac was in CA as early as 1832 with the Bonneville party; he had an early knowledge of the Sierra Nevada mountains and was along with his widowed daughter, Elizabeth Patterson and her 5 children as a member and guide for the Murphy-Stephens party; broke off from the main trail at Fort Hall and became the first to take wagons over what is now known as Donner Pass; wife died in 1843 prior to emigration; the following records are from a binder full of family history left at the Family History Library in 2017 in Visalia, CA, written by G.Darling, 1 December 1998, transcribed by the staff at the library.

Isaac's occupation listed as Mountain Man, Trapper-Trader in Western Frontier 1812-1855. Early Missouri Ancestors, Vol 2 Newspapers 1823-1832:Isaac bankrupt-Lafayette County, MO 7 Apr 1826 History Jackson County, MO pg 137 - 1827: Isaac delinquent in taxes $1.06. 1812 Purchased land in Paintsville, Johnson, KY from History of Paintsville. One of original Masons who formed Masonic Lodge in Santa Cruz, 1853 Listed in Santa Cruz Riptide as one of the guides for the Stephens Townsend Murphy Party 1844 1874 - Edmund Bray, who was in the Stephens T. & M. party wrote to Bancroft. Indicated that Hitchcock and gave great help on route to CA. Also indicated that he was an Old Trapper/Trader who had ridden with Sublette's (unknown which ones). According to Elisha Stephens - Hitchcock guided the train through what was called the Greenwood Cutoff from the Oregon Trail which was later called the Sublette's Cutoff. Annals of Santa Cruz - Isaac with his daughter Elizabeth Patterson appears there in 1845. Interview 1933 with Lydia M. Casaday - daughter of Isaac indicates that he was with John Du can Green and they rode with Bonneville to CA in early 1830s. Private in Mexican War 1846 in Santa Clara County, California Battalion from Nov 21, 1846 to Feb 21, 1847. (He was 66 in 1846) Buried in the pioneer cemetery on the west cliffs.
