Biography
Christian Hockman, "son of Abraham," purchased 100 acres of land from Daniel Funkhouser, "son of Abraham, deceased," in the Mulberry Run area northwest of Strasburg, in Shenandoah County, Virginia, June 11, 1804.[1] The following year he married Mary Schmucker and they were living on this farm when the 1810 census was made.[2] In February 1811 Christian purchased 87 acres on the North Fork of the Shenandoah east of Maurertown from Peter Eshelman and two years later purchased another 165 acres, from his brother-in-law, Ferdinand Schmucker, adjoining the 87 acre tract.[3] They apparently moved to this property but in early 1820 sold it to George Shaver and moved further south into Rockingham County, where they appear in the 1820 census.[4] Christian and "Anna Maria's " son, Jacob, was baptized at Rader Lutheran
Church in Timberville (northern Rockingham County), Virginia, in May 1821.[5] Christian and his family lived on a 200 acre farm in northern Rockingham for about ten years but in 1829 he and "Ann Mary" sold the farm to John Moore and moved to Ohio, and were living in Rush Creek Township, Fairfield
County, when the 1830 census was made.[6]
They did not stay long in Fairfield County but settled on a farm in adjoining Hocking County, where they are listed in the 1850 census in Falls Township.[7] Christian was ill in November and December 1858 and died on or about December 26, 1858.[8]
