CAUTION: There are apparently two Solomon Leonards who lived about the same time, both married a "Huldah", and both had a daughter named "Mary". One was from Massachusetts and the other from New York.
The Solomon b. 1767 from NY married Huldah Hodge. THIS PROFILE.
The Solomon from MA b. 29 Mar 1765 Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts married Huldah Orcutt b. 1765 (different profile)
This is the Hodge/Leonards not the Orcutt/Leonards.

Biography

Solomon, who married Huldah Hodge, may have been born in colonial New York, as families were beginning to settle the state as early as the 1740s. His parents may be Abraham Leonard b. 1738 and Mary Lewis b. 1737

Solomon is enumerated in Onondaga County, New York in 1800 and 1810. In 1820, he is enumerated in Hector, Tompkins (that portion that is now Schuyler) County, New York.

Solomon is related to have died in 1825 Tompkins County, New York. In the 1825 state census enumeration Huldah was the head of household with a notation of the death of one male in that year.

In the Tompkins County land records of 1827, the Sheriff of Tompkins County, from a writ of the Court of Common Pleas was directed to direct goods and chattels unto Curtis H. Leonard, Abraham Leonard 2d, Elisha Leonard, Ezra Grinold and Lucretia, his wife; Benoni Campbell and Mary, his wife; Truman B. Warner and Mabel, his wife; Henry Stringham and Solomon Leonard Stringham "heirs of Solomon Leonard, deceased" for a $1,000 debt. Huldah Leonard removed with her children to Wells and d. 3 Feb 1842 73y 6m 13d (ts) Coryland Cemetery.

Solomon Leonard, Jr., b. c. 1790 was a witness on land transactions involving Solomon and Huldah Leonard in Tompkins County (1819 and 1825), New York and in the latter transaction, he is noted as "Jr". He is perhaps the Solomon in the 1825 state census enumeration. He does not appear as an heir in the 1827 Tompkins County record. He is perhaps the Solomon Leonard who appears on the 1830 assessment list of Wells and on the 1831 list had transferred his property to John Frost and perhaps is the Solomon Leonard enumerated in the 1835 state census of Tompkins County.

Questions

If he fought with New York in the War, was he awarded land in the Central New York Military Tract? Three of the towns in that tract were Pompey, Fabius, Hector. Is he related to Justus Leonard's line? Or perhaps to Capt. Asa Leonard? Was his wife related to Curtis Hodges born in Washington Co., New York?

What we do know is that at the 1800 US Census, Solomon's family was living in Pompey, Onondaga Co., New York and included one male born between 1756-1774 along with one male born before 1755. At the 1810 US Census, the family was in Fabius, Onondaga County and the oldest male was born between 1766 and 1784. Based on Census data, Solomon was born between 1766 and 1774.

By the 1820 US Census the family was in Hector, Tomkins, NY. One immediate neighbor was the Joel Campbell family into which Mary Leonard would marry.

Key neighbors on the censuses include: Curtis Hodges Sr. on the 1800 Census (was he Huldah's brother?), Curtis Hodges Jr. on the 1810 Census (was he Huldah's nephew?), and Isaiah Grinnel also on the 1810 Census (was Isaiah the father of Ezra who married Lucretia Leonard?) By the 1820 US Census Curtis Hodges Sr. and Jr. were both living in Painted Post, Steuben County.

We have a better idea of when Solomon died: At the 1825 NY Census, Huldah had become head of the household. One male death had occurred during the census year: Solomon's. Also, the last land record Solomon was party to was dated April 23, 1824. Therefore Solomon died between that date and the actual enumeration of the 1825 NY State census.

In 1827, Tompkins County land records include a Writ of the Court of Common Pleas directed to Solomon's surviving heirs:

• son Curtis Hodge Leonard • son Abraham Leonard 2d [2d because there was already another Abraham Leonard in the area when Abraham 2d was born]
• son Elisha (b. ca 1800: he wasn't on the 1800 Census but he was listed with a birth period of 1795-1800 on the 1810 Census.)
• dau. Lucretia, wife of Ezra Grinnell
• dau. Mary, wife of Benoni Campbell
• dau. Mabel, wife of Truman B. Warner
• grandson Henry Stringham
• grandson Solomon Leonard Stringham

Once the legal affairs were settled, Huldah and their surviving children moved to Pennsylvania. Solomon and Huldah had at least two children who weren't listed as surviving heirs:

• a daughter, b. 1785-1794 as indicated by the 1800 US Census and apparently had died by 1827. She was the mother of Henry Stringham and Solomon Leonard Stringham. If she followed naming conventions typical at that time, her husband was probably Henry Stringham.
• Solomon Jr, b. 1785-1790 and apparently didn't survive past 1826. We know he existed because he was a witness on 1819 and 1825 land transactions involving Solomon and Huldah in Tompkins County; in the 1825 transaction he was referred to as "Solomon Jr."

Some trees show possible parents for Huldah Hodge are John Hodge born March 18 1725 in Glastonbury, Hartford, Connecticut, USA AND Sarah Taylor. (no sources) John Hodge, born 1725 in Glastonbury, who was the son of Samuel Hodge, born 1686 in Suffield, Connecticut, who was the son John Hodge, born 1643 of Windsor, Connecticut. (“Baptisms and Confirmations for the Dead”, page 863, Salt Lake Temple, January 21, 1933, with David Peery and Ruby Johnson as proxies. (FHL microfilm # 183,545.)) BUT Hodge family records from archive.org (below) show no Huldah Hodge in any of their family trees.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Huldah by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Huldah:
