Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Isham Hodges II was a Virginia colonist.

Isham Hodges was born May 23, 1763 in Virginia. However since Henry County was not formed until 1777, when Henry County was formed from Pittsylvania County, this may have been Pittsylvania County,[1]

He married Elizabeth "Betsy" Clay ca. 1782 in Henry County, Virginia [2]

In 1812, Isham and Betsy migrated to Smith County, Tennessee along with his younger brother Asa Hodges.[3] By the time Isham Hodges arrived in Tennessee, he was signing his name Isham Hodges Sr. Their third son born in Virginia, was named Isham Hodges Jr. The stay of Isham Hodges Sr. and Elizabeth in Smith County only lasted approximately three years then they moved on into Sumner County, Tennessee where he paid taxes on 83 acres of land on Caney Fork Creek in 1815.[4]In 1826, Isham, Sr. and a nephew, Holly Hodges (Aaron's son) purchased another 100 acres of land. Isham Hodges, Sr. signed his will in Sumner County on December 23, 1829 which includes the words: "lawful heirs of my son Isham Hodges."[5][6]

He died in Sumner County, Tennessee on July 14, 1839. The will was presented at the August 1839 term of the Court in Sumner County, Tennessee.[7]
