Biography

Ludwig was born 10th of May, 1881 and was baptized on the 15th of May, at Edingen, in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.[1][2]

In the 1920 census, he was found in Custer township, near Hebron in Morton county, North Dakota, living with his wife Mary. He had immigrated in 1885, was able to speak English, was a naturalized citizen and owned his own farm. In the household, it was listed: Louis Hoerauf, 36, Mary 26, Mary 10, Martha 10, Emma 7, Emil 6, Paulina 4, Albert 3, Alma 2, Martin 6 months, and George 66[3]. Louis should be 39 at this point. The girls Mary and Martha were from his first wife Marie Hartman.[4]

In the 1925 North Dakota state census, he is now listed as 43, again in Custer township. His family is listed next to the Theolo Ding family, Karl Saxowsky family and the Valentin Hoerauf family. Emma is now listed as Amma, Emil becomes Emile. In addition, there is Martin 5, Edna 4, Walter 2 and Alvin 1. [5]

By 1930, a new item on the census is owning a radio set (he does not). He is listed as 29 at first marriage (should be 27 according to the Michael Hoerauf booklet). He did not attend school, but can read and write. Speaks German, also able to speak English. Emma is still Amma, but Emil is no longer Emile. Another child is Arnold, age 1 1/2 and newborn Helda (Hilda). Ludwig has 13 children altogether.[6]

In the 1940 census, several older children have left, and he is now widowed. Value of house is 2000, he completed 6th grade.[7]

Louis died 1963, and is buried in Lebanon, Linn County, Oregon.[8]
