Biography

Daughters of the American Revolution
James Hoge Sr. is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A056527.
1776 Project
James Hoge Sr. performed Patriotic Service in Virginia in the American Revolution.

James Mayo Hoge Sr. was born 4 July 1706 in Cumberland Valley, Bedford, Pennsylvania, United States to William Hoge Sr. and Barbara Lambert (nee Hume) Hoge.

"The Family of Hoge", Chapter Four

The Southwest Virginia Hoges: As has been stated, these are the descendants from James Hoge, b-7, son of William Hoge and Barbara Hume. He married first, Agnes Crawford, second Nancy Griffith. In the "Life of Moses D. Hoge" it is stated that his grandfather Rev Moses D. Hoge, D. D., was the ninth son of his father and the fourth son of his mother Nancy Griffith.

We regret that the names of at least three children have not been given. James Hoge, b-7, was born in 1706 and died June 2, 1795. He is described as "a man eminent for his clear understanding, devout piety, fear of God and love of the Gospel of Christ"

Children: e-300 JOHN by first wife b. 1730 Supposed to have joined Braddock's Army and to have been killed at Fort Duquesne

e-301 JAMES by first wife b. 1732; m. Elizabeth Howe in 1768, d. April 5 1812. She, b. 1750 both buried in the old Howe burying ground in Pulaski county Virginia

e-302 A DAUGHTER by first wife, name not given. She was the grandmother of General Robert Evans, who founded Evansville Indiana, and of Martha, known as Mattie Evans, one of the captives of Abbs Valley. Dr. William Brown, in his history of the Captives of Abbs Valley, erroneously gives her name as "Martha Ivans". My grandfather, General James Hoge, who lived at this Pulaski home, frequently told me of General Evans and his sister Martha, stopping with his father James Hoge, whilst on their way to Abbs Valley to visit the Moores, after Martha's recovery from the Indians.

e-303 SOLOMON By second wife

e-304 EDWARD By second wife, see d-900

e-303 MOSES, REV., D.D. By second wife, b. February 15, 1752, m. first Elizabeth Poage, second Mrs. Susannah Hunt, widow of William Pitt Hunt, and daughter of Colonel James Watkins at Prince Edward County Virginia d July 5 1820

e-301 JAMES b. 1732 m. Elizabeth Howe, daughter of Joseph Howe and Ellen Dunbar 1768 d. April 5 1812

As has been explained, he [James e-301] left his father's home near Opequon Church in Frederick County, Virginia, in search of his elder brother John, who is supposed to have been killed at Fort Duquesne. He failed to find his brother and wended his way on up the Valley of virginia, and finally found his home and wife, and was married at the old Howe homestead, just one-half mile from Belle Hampton, which became the home of the Hoges and is now in possession of the great-grandson of this James Hoge, James Hoge Tyler, who gave the name of Belle Hampton to the place in compliment to his little daughters, Belle and Sue Hampton.

Major Howe had first settled near Boston, Massachusetts, but his adventurous spirit led him to seek a home in the wild forests of Southwest Virginia, and he was one of the three first settlers west of New River. He was a courtly and elegant gentleman, a first cousin of Lord Howe and General Wayne, and nearly related to Elias Howe, the inventor. He met on the vessel that brough him from England a beautiiful girl, Ellen Dunbar, and they fell in love with each other and married soon after landing in Massachusetts - a little romantic feature similar to that of William Hoge and Barbara Hume.

James Hoge, e-301, settled at Belle Hampton, and as will be seen, was the progenitor of all the Hoges of Southwest Virginia and many who trace their lineage through this branch, now scattered throughout the south and southwest and other states.[1]

Death

He died in 1795 in How Burning Ground, Pulaski Co, Virginia; or 2 June 1795 in Sunnyside, Pulaski, Virginia, United States, and is buried in Kernstown, Frederick County, Virginia, USA.

Research Notes

  • Most books and records record Agnes Crawford as his first wife and Nancy Griffiths as his second wife. However, I, along with some other current Hoge/Hogue family researchers believe that his will proves otherwise. His will has been found in several places but most noticeably in the Frederick County, Virginia Will Book pages 90 and 92.
    • It states thus: Wife: Agnus Hoge, Children: Moses, James, Solomon, John, Edward (deceased), Martha Allen, Mary Evans, Barbara Reed. Grand children: Moses and Edwards, sons of Edward, deceased.
    • "Being somewhat ailing in body to wife, negro Jude beside her thirds. Personal estate to be appraised except the still; remainder to children as wife decides. If she marries, all but widow's thirds to be divided , half to son Moses, quarter to son James, quarter to daughter Martha Allen. To grandsons Moses and Edward Hoge, land in survey made by Thomas Buck, 186 acres Moses to enjoy whole until his brother Edward is 21. If one dies, survivor to have whole. Son Solomon Hoge to have all the rest of the land, conditioned on his payment of legacies; to John Hoge, son, to Mary Evans, to Barbara Reed - 5 shellings if they come to demand it; to son James, 20 pounds; to daughter Martha Allen, 15 pounds. Wife and Solomon to share plantation as outlined, EXR: wife Agnes Hoge. Witnesses: John Setzer, Phillip Barr, Mary Setzer. SEC: Peter Senseney - John Setzer. Bond of 2000 pounds."
    • Besides the children of Nancy are much older than the children of Agnes.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

According to the tree, James's parents were brother and sister. I don't believe this is true. It needs more research.

they weren’t bro and sis. They did have the same first names though..James and Marjorie.
