Thomas was the son of John Holford and Margery Brereton.[1][2] His father held lands at Holford, Cheshire,[3][4] so he may have been born there: but his father also had interests in Flintshire, Wales through his mother.[3][4] His birth date is uncertain. He was his father's main heir, and inherited property at Holford, Cheshire.[3][4]
Margaret must have died before 28 June 1539 when Thomas obtained a licence for his second marriage.[1][2]
Thomas's second wife was Joan/Jane Booth;[1][2][5][6][7] they married by a licence dated 28 June 1539, and had a dispensation for the marriage as they were within the prohibited degrees of affinity under canon law.[1][2] They had six children:[1][2]
