Peter Holland Jr was born about 1716 in the part of Essex Virginia that became Caroline County in 1728, the son of Peter Holland. For many years, most researchers thought Peter's mother was Susannah Tarrant Reynolds. This now known to be incorrect (see profile for Tarrant-388 for details). At present, Peter's mother remains unidentified.

The estimate for Peter's birth is derived from a Bedford Co. deposition he made dated 22 May 1769 in which he gave his age as " about fifty three years". (Note the age is very difficult to read, could be forty three, fifty three, or even eighty three, see chancery source and image.) Several sources have reported that Peter's middle initial was "M." Since no actual records are known which use that initial, it has been omitted from this profile until some evidence is provided to support it.

Peter's father lived in Caroline County, Virginia and this is where Peter Jr. would have grown up. Deed and will records for Caroline Co. were destroyed during the Civil War so it is not possible to identify many specifics there. But it is probable that Peter, Sr. moved his family by 1748 to the area of Goochland Co. that became Cumberland Co. in 1749. Several records confirm this, although it remains difficult to separate records between father and son.

Sometime prior to 1752, Peter moved his family into the part of Lunenburg Co. which became Bedford Co. in 1754. He remained there at least until a portion of Bedford Co. was split to form Franklin Co. in 1786.

Although it is unlikely Peter served with the military during the Revolutionary War, he did furnish supplies for that effort. On March 25, 1782, Peter Holland furnished Christopher Irvine (Bedford Co Commissary) with 275 pounds of beef, six diets (a term used for meals) and one peck of oats. Bedford Co Court Order Book 6, p. 341.

Peter married Mariah "Diggins" around 1740, probably in Caroline Co. No record for the marriage is known. In fact, there is some question as to whether she was really a Diggins. No records for any member of a "Diggins" family has been located in Caroline or Cumberland Co. However, there are records for a Dicken/Dickens family in association with Peter Holland. The two surnames are close enough phonetically to suggest the spelling of Mariah's name may have been carried down through the years incorrectly. More research is necessary.

Sometime around September 1778, Peter donated 6 acres of land, from his Goose Creek patent land of 1759, to the "Separate Anabaptists" for Meeting House. A record from 1767 implies Peter left the Quakers and joined the Baptists around that time.

In 1779, Peter and some of his sons signed the Bedford Co. petition to form a new county south of Staunton Co., later to become Franklin Co. in 1786.

Peter probably died sometime around 1787, probably in Franklin Co. The last Bedford Co. record for him was in 1785 and the 1787 tax list for Franklin has Peter Holland, Jr. listed, suggesting the elder Peter may still have been living at that time. There are no will or estate documents in either Bedford or Franklin Co. Therefore, it is assumed he either had a will that was never recorded, or he had distributed his estate before he died, leaving nothing of value for estate proceedings.

The circa 1716 DOB used for this profile is based on a deposition from 1769 in which Peter Holland stated his age as about 53. This is substantially different from the c1735 and c1740 DOB's found in various DAR/SAR applications, referenced in the recently added 'tags' in this profile. There is little doubt that he would be considered a "Patriot Ancestor" but those applications cannot be be considered as reliable sources.
