Peter Holland was born about 1755, probably in Bedford County. It's possible he could have been born in Cumberland Co., before his father moved the family to Bedford. Peter was the son of Peter Holland and Mariah Diggins.

Peter married Mary Meador about 1777 in Bedford County. She was the daughter of John Meador and Jane Holloway. Mary was born in 1757 in Cumberland Co., where it is very likely her father and Peter's father were relatively close neighbors. Mary died sometime between 1820-November 1827, as she is not mentioned in Peter's will.

Peter appears to have settled in Franklin county on the north side of the Blackwater River near today's Crossroads community. He also had some land south of the Blackwater near Poplar Camp Creek. It's very possible some of his land is now under Smith Mountain Lake. Peter was a farmer and slave owner.

Peter and Mary raised a large family. Their children would include:

1. John Meador Holland, born 30 January 1778 in Bedford Co., married Mary Smith 2 January 1797. She was the daughter of John and Frances Smith, born January 1780 and died 6 June 1863. 13 children.
2. Milly Holland, born 1780 in Bedford Co., married William McCall 11 November 1799 in Franklin Co. At least 11 children.
3. Lydia Holland, born 5 December 1781 in Bedford Co., married Robert Nimmo 18 January 1800 in Franklin Co. At least 9 children.
4. Nancy Holland, born 1783 in Bedford Co., married Matthew Wright in 1799. 11 children.
5. Peter Diggins Holland, born 1785 in Bedford Co., married Frances Hancock 11 February 1807. He died 12 April 1833 in Franklin Co. Frances was born 12 May 1787 in Franklin Co., the daughter of Lewis and Celia Hancock. She died 20 July 1844. 9 children.
6. Sarah Frances Holland, born 1787 in Franklin Co., married Benjamin Hancock 6 January 1806. He was the son of Lewis and Celia Hancock. 5 children.
7. Mary Holland, born 1790/91 in Franklin Co., married Wyatt Smith 12 October 1810. At least 8 children.
8. Jane Holland, born 1793 in Franklin Co., married Samuel Smith 10 October 1811. 4 children.

Peter wrote his will 9 years before his death. In the will, he names all of his 9 living children and four grandchildren. One daughter, Sarah Frances 'Fanny' Holland Hancock had died before the will was written.

Peter Holland III, and his wife Mary, are buried at the 4-H Center Cemetery, Franklin County, Virginia, USA
