Bernard Hollingsworth

Bernard Hollingsworth was the son of Thomas Hollingsworth and Mary Ann Sartor. He was born May 22, 1791, Union County, South Carolina.

"Between 1766 and 1770 several Hollingsworth families along with many Quaker families migrated to the Carolinas', which proved to be a mistake. The farmland was not suitable and being anti-slavery, they were in a poor competitive position. This caused most of the Quakers to migrate again, this time to Ohio and the Indiana Territory. In 1805 seven Hollingsworth families left in one group. They split at the Ohio River, three going to Ohio and four to the Indiana Territory. Quaker records reveal that many who went into Ohio soon came the Indiana Territory, which was then the frontier and good land could be obtained by Federal grant."

Between about 1803 and 1805, the family moved from South Carolina to Ohio. Different stories and versions not resolved:

  • In 1805 he moved from South Carolina to Ohio.
  • Or, Bernard moved to Indiana in 1803 with his father Thomas.
  • Daniel emigrated with his parents and siblings from South Carolina to Ohio at age 10 and on to Knox County, Indiana the next year (1804/l805).
  • William Hollingsworth went from South Carolina to Indiana about 1805, with nephews and cousins.

Caesar's Creek Monthly Meeting, Society of Friends--The Quakers

The founders and most of the original members of the Caesar's Creek Monthly Meeting migrated from Cane Creek, South Carolina to the Northwest territory to escape the evils of slavery. In effect, the entire Cane Creek Meeting transplanted itself in southwestern Ohio along winding and beautiful Caesar's Creek near Waynesville, Ohio. The original log Meetinghouse was built on the east side of Caesar's Creek in Clinton County. On October 10, 1805, Caesar's Creek was declared an indulged Meeting (a trial Meeting) for worship by the Miami Monthly Meeting. Among the charter members were Robert Furnas, Clerk and elder; Ann Compton, clerk; and John Mendenhall, Isaac Hawkins, Thomas Cox, Joseph Cook and Rachel Lewis were overseers. Other names associated with the Meeting are Conner, Coppock, Farquhar, Hollingsworth, Kenworthy, Mills, Milhouse, Wilson, Spray, Arnold, Reagan, Sanders, Whitson, Cloud, Bridges and Connor. Henry Milhouse, one of the early Quaker settlers and founders of this Meeting, was the 7th cousin of President Richard Nixon. He is buried in the Caesar's Creek Cemetery which is surrounded by a stone wall. In 1807, the first log Meetinghouse was abandoned and another piece of land was bought across the creek in Warren County. On this spot another log Meetinghouse was built. By this time it was Caesar's Creek Preparative Meeting, part of Center Monthly Meeting (located on Center Road in Clinton County).

October 10, 1805, Meetinghouse was built on the east side of Caesar's Creek in Clinton County, Ohio.

History of Fort Knox II, Vincennes

In 1803, the army garrison within the town was moved to a bluff three miles north of Vincennes after local residents complained the soldiers spent most of their time in local saloons. The site, a bluff overlooking the Wabash River, was chosen because of its command of the river, a good boat landing and nearby spring. Fort Knox II was born.

But with the activities of the Shawnee brothers Tecumseh and The Prophet, the local situation became more dangerous. More soldiers were assigned to the area and on September 26, 1811, the fort under the command of Capt. Zachary Taylor became the jumping-off place for Territorial Governor William Henry Harrison's rendezvous with destiny, the Battle of Tippecanoe.

Fort Knox II became a hospital for the sick and wounded of that battle who were floated down river on boats from Fort Harrison in Terre Haute. Today, the fort is outlined with short posts, and interpretive markers tell the story of the site. It is located three miles north of Vincennes.

  9. Source: #S385 "Between 1766 and 1770 several Hollingsworth families along with many Quaker families migrated to the Carolinas', which proved to be a mistake. Quaker records reveal that many who went into Ohio soon came the Indiana Territory, which was then the frontier and good land could be obtained by Federal grant." In effect, the entire Cane Creek Meeting transplanted itself in southwestern Ohio along winding and beautiful Caesar's Creek near Waynesville, Ohio.
