Biography

He "graduated at Yale College in 1840, and took his A.M. in course; studied law in Northampton, Mass., and in the New Haven Law-School, and was admitted to the New-Haven bar in 1842; has been grand juror for New Haven, and in 1848, was clerk of the Connecticut Senate, and for several years was principal magistrate of the town of New Haven. In 1854-5, he was adjutant-general of the State; is a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, New Haven, of which he was one of the founders in 1845, and of which he has always been one of the most prominent members, having served as vestryman from 1845 to 1852, parish clerk during the same period, collector from 1864 to 1876, treasurer during the same period, junior warden 1853-4, and senior warden from 1855 to 1880. He has been superintendent of the Sunday-school for more than 30 years.

The compiler of this work wishes here to acknowledge the great help he has received from Mr. Hollister in the preparation of the portion of the book relating to the descendants of Gurdon Hollister of Lenox, Mass. Also, for much valuable information relating to other branches of the family.

He married 1st, Martha L. Bradley of New Haven, Feb. 17, 1841; she was born March 6, 1821, and died March 5, 1849; 2d, Sarah S. Shipman of New Haven, Oct. 31, 1850; she was born Jan. 31, 1 82 1, and is probably a descendant of Edward Shipman, who came to Saybrook in 1639, with George Fenwick."[1]
