Elisha Crawford was born in 1839. Elisha Crawford Holmes volunteered his services as a soldier at the age of 16 enlisting in the "Summit Rifles" - "the first company to leave Pike County for the front and served throughout the war." "The Summit Rifles was designated as Co. A, 16th Mississippi Regiment." The Summit Rifles served under Generals Ewell and Stonewall Jackson against N.P. Banks in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia." They served with valor in many battles defending the South against the onslaught of unwelcome invaders. {See pages 183-190 in PIKE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI 1798-1876 by Luke Ward Conerly, 1909.} He passed away in 1917.
Grandfather Elisha Holmes, Sr., came from Morgan County, Georgia (1811) with his wife, Sarah Sally Stovall. Prior to their residence in Morgan County, Elisha and his family lived in Lincoln County. Most of his children were born in that area.In 1812 Elisha & Sarah Holmes, in company with the Stovalls, Foils, and other immigrants, came to Mississippi. They settled on Collins Creek, Pike County, Mississippi in the early part of 1800. They were the original ancestors of the extensive Holmes family in Pike County.
In Mississippi, Elisha Holmes followed the profession of a blacksmith and did well with it. He reared a large family - all of whom were respected within the community. His home was located 3 miles east of the present town of Tylertown, now known as the "Jap" Holmes Place. He came to America as a small child with his parents. They landed in Norfolk, Virginia. Elisha owned land in both Baldwin and Lincoln County, Georgia. In Feb, 1817, he transacted several deeds in Morgan County, Georgia., in which he sold what estate he had in Georgia. On Feb 2, 1817, he sold 202 1/2 acres lying on Indian creek in the 15th District of Baldwin County for $1500 to William Faine. On the 11th he sold property in Lincoln County to Absolom Tanklsley. Tanklsley Tree This land was on Soap Creek, 100 acres he had acquired from his father, John Holmes, Sr. He set out for Mississippi after the Feb. 11, 1817, land sale. Settled in Pike County on Collins creek, three miles east of Tylertown In Lincoln County, Georgia., Augusta, Elisha served juries April, 1802 and Oct., 1804. He was a member of the Goshen Baptist Church. He was brought before the church in July, 1806 for using improper language, and by Aug., 1806 was expelled for his "indifference". HE IS LISTED IN THE 1820 AND 1840 CENSUSES, PIKE County, Mississippi. Emigrated from Ireland as a small boy, possibly landing at Norfolk, Virginia. with his father James (or Jim). Unable to prove the authenticity of James. Elisha was witness of will of Josiah Stovall, Nov 7, 1798 in Lincolnton, Georgia area and acted as "agent" for a John Holmes in a tax payment in Georgia.
Pvt./4th Corp./2nd Corp. Elisha Crawford Holmes (b. Pike County, MS, 1839-d. Walthall County, MS, 1917), Co. A ("Summit Rifles," raised in Pike County, MS), 16th MS Infantry. Enlisted April 20, 1861, at Summit, Pike County, MS, at age 21.

Present on April 1864 company muster roll. Aug. 11, 1864, company muster roll states "wounded in action at [the Battle of] Spotsylvania Courthouse [VA on] May 12, 1864." Admitted to General Hospital, Howard's Grove, Richmond, VA, on May 17, 1864.
Present on Sept. 15, 1864, company muster roll. Captured at the Siege of Petersburg, VA, on Sept. 10, 1864. Forwarded as POW to City Point, VA, on Sept. 23, 1864. Released at war's end from POW Camp at Point Lookout, MD, on June 6, 1865. Southern Patriot! Corp. Holmes filed Confederate Pension applications in Walthall County, MS, in 1915 & 1916. Buried in the Elisha Crawford Holmes Cemetery, appr. 50 ft. due W of appr. 275 Carto Road, Carto, Walthall County, MS, with supposedly a Confederate marker as a relative (W.L. Holmes) ordered one for him from the VA in 1931 and it was shipped to Tylertown, Walthall County, MS. Bio by - Jim Huffman
