William Albert Holmes was either a child born before their marriage or the adopted son of Frederick Holmes and Catherine Tomlinson. His birth is recorded on his marriage and death certificates as Hull, England, however his birth documents have not yet been located. His parents were English but married in Townsville a few years after his birth. He had one adopted sister, and recorded himself on his father's death certificate as the only child of their marriage.
William worked first as a shopkeeper/owner, family stories indicate that he owned a number of shops but lost them during the Depression, and later became an optometrist.
William married Edith Fanny Dillon on the 26th of April 1909 at the Holy Trinity Church in Erskineville in 1909.[1] They lived at 21 Whiting St., Leichhardt,[2] and had two sons, William and John Frederick (Jack).
Edith Fanny died in 1937, and William remarried to spinster Edith Gladys Dight at St Stephen's Church, Newtown, on the 10th of March 1945.[3] According to his granddaughter, she was an old friend of the family.
He died on the 24th of May, 1972, at the Abrina Convalescent Home, Ashfield. He was cremated at Rookwood on the 29th of May.[4]
