Biography

It appears that 16-year-old Annetje and Titus Syrachs DeVries were the parents of a child Jan (no surname or parents given), who was baptized 1 April 1678 at Brooklyn Church. The sponsors of the child were Catalina Rapalje and Jeronimus Rapalje.[1] "The sponsors appear to be Antje Hooghlandt's great Uncle, Jeronimus who was married to Titus Syrach's wife's sister and Antje's Great Grandmother, Catalina Trico Rapalje. (Antje's mother had died around this time period and her father was just recently remarried.)"[2]

From the record it appears that Titus Syrachs was "unrepentant," forcing the church authorities from Flatbush and surrounding villages, after an inconclusive meeting, to call for colleagues from New Amsterdam to help judge the case in August of the following year:

Judgment of Titus Syrachs

"Inasmuch as Titus Syrachs De Vries, captain of the company from Midwood, had unseemly behaved himself with a young maiden, Annetje Dirks, forcing her to commit adultery, the minister called a general consistory of the elders of the four villages. But since this was a matter which stretched to extreme consequences, and since no one in individual church is empowered to dismiss an unrepentant and offensive member without the knowledge of the Honorable Classis, or at any rate (for want thereof) that of its neighboring churches, the said minister and the consistory of Midwood deemed it best to summon and request Dominie Nieuwenhuisen with two of his elders from New York to join with them in discussing this matter."

"Having arrived, it was unanimously decided by the members of this meeting that they should first forbid the said sinner participation in the Lord's Supper. Meanwhile, they would keep watch over his conduct and wait to see how this crime of his shall be treated and adjudged by the great Court of Assizes, which is to be held on the first Wednesday in October next....

"Titus Sijrachsz shall be earnestly exhorted to improvement and the enormity of his sin set before him, and furthermore, he shall be excluded from participation in the Lord's Supper so long as he exhibits no better sign of repentance."[3]

This wasn't the end of the matter, as Annetje's father took Titus to court: "De Vries, guilty by his own confession, was placed 'under censure' by the church, and being also arrested under civil process at the instance of Hoogland, was fined £25 by the Court of Assize at New York, October 3, 1679, that being the extent of his punishment, while the injured girl was subjected to what seems to us now a harsh verdict, 'to be whipt and receive seven lashes on her bare back at the Common Whipping Post before the end of the Court, or pay a fine of £5 and costs."[4]

Marriage

The compiler of the Hoagland genealogy surmises that Annetje was living with her aunt Marritie Hansen Bergen (wife of Jacob Rutse) in Esopus, Ulster County, when she married Hendrick Hendricks van Wagen at Kingston on 19 April 1684.[5]

"They had a son, Hendric, baptized 7 December 1684, Derick Hoogland [presumably Annetje's father] and Sarah ---- being witnesses. Their daughter Annetje was baptized at Esopus September 5, 1686." Witnesses at this baptism were mother Annetje's above-mentioned aunt Marritie and husband Jacob Rutse.[6]

Annetje next married Gerrit Lammertse around 1693: "Baptismal and Marriage Registers of the Old Dutch Church of Kingston, Ulster County, New York (1660-1809) [show] a child named Breechje was baptized on June 10, 1694 and the parents listed are Gerrit Lammertsen and Antje Hooghlant. The sponsors listed are Hendrik Bogaart and Jannetje Martensen. Two other children of this couple are also listed in the same source: Theunis (bapt. Feb. 7, 1697 - sponsor is Dirrick Hoogland) and Dirrick (bapt. Dec. 25, 1703 - sponsors were Huybert Lambertse and Hendrickje Lambertse)."[7]

  9. The baptism records for the three children identified with Hendric van Wayen and Annetie Hoogland have three different patronymic names for the mother. This results in some uncertainty. Annetie's proper patronymic would have been Dirckx or a variant, as appears for the baptism of the first child, Hendric. The patronymic recorded with the second child was Gerritz, possible reason for which is not identifiable. For the the third child, the patronymic recorded was Jansen, which was Annetie's father's patronymic. That child was the second son; his given name of Derick is consistent with the child's maternal grandfather having that name.

Hoogland-485 and Hoogland-9 appear to represent the same person because: Same person, same husband (last name spelling varies) same child, same location of death, dates, etc.
Hooghlandt-1 and Hoogland-9 appear to represent the same person because: Let's go ahead and merge this to clear away the false ghost parent. We simply have to merge each sibling, and that will clear the error. Add aka

Hooghlandt. The match death date Died 29 Oct 1664 would make her an infant, but very unlikely, since the match is a wife and mother. I saved the date here, which may be a christening date. Thanks!

Steven, are you able to open up the profiles for the [private father] and [private mother] or are those still locked to the original importer? As you pointed out on the profile of her brother Amos, born 77 years after her, the parentage for these siblings seems to be a merging of generations. This was back in Feb 2015 and the profile manager for the other siblings, Broody-3, appears to have stopped all activity one day after importing the .ged file.
