Biography

William Hooper was born about 1766 likely in Falmouth, Cumberland County, Province (now State) of Maine. William's approximate birth year is inferred from his age of 71 as engraved on his headstone and is calculated from his date of death on July 11, 1837. William was the son of John and Lydia (Baker) Hooper. Shortly after birth of William, John and Lydia removed further up the northeastern coast of Maine to Deer Isle, Hancock County where John Hooper first appeared as a property owner per Town records in 1767 and where he was known as an "early settler" of that Town.

Per Hosmer [p. 92, source below], William was known as "Captain Hooper," a title likely earned from seafaring and, as far as is known, not a rank of military service. Federal Censuses 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, and 1830 provide information concerning William's places of residence:

-In the 1800 Fed. Census for Deer Isle, William reported to have emigrated, i.e. "From Whence Emigrated," from "Scituate." Therefore, it appears that the young William removed from Deer Isle to Scituate after reaching adult age about 1784. With extended family members still living in that area, this is likely where William continued to learn the skills of seafaring. Then, by 1790, he returned to and settled in Deer Isle constructing an abode next to his father. Per the 1790 Fed. Census, William was enumerated as head of a household of one (1), i.e. self, living adjacent to his father. It would only be months thereafter that William married Elizabeth Brown of Blue Hill on January 3, 1791 in Deer Isle.
-As enumerated in the 1800 Fed. Census, William and Elizabeth began their family and resided in Deer Isle.
-By 1810, William, wife Elizabeth, and children had removed to nearby Sedgwick.
-Sometime after 1830, William and Elizabeth resided in that part of Sedgwick that was setoff and known as the town of Brooklin where they lived out the rest of their lives and where they are buried.

As above provided, on January 3, 1791, William married Elizabeth "Betsey" Brown in Deer Isle. Their children included Jeremiah b. 1792, William Jr. b. 1894, Eliza b. 1797, David b. 1800, Samuel b. 1804, and Amos b. 1807.

In the 1800 U.S. Federal Census Record, William's household was enumerated with 6 family members: 1 male age 26-44 (self), 1 female age 26-44 (wife Elizabeth), 3 males under 10 (Jeremiah, William, and infant David), and 1 female under 10 (Eliza).

As aforementioned, sometime after 1800, William and Elizabeth moved their family to the adjacent town of Sedgwick. Both William and a John Hooper (who married Azubah Billings) are listed in the 1810 Federal Census for Sedgwick as their place of residence. These two Hoopers, i.e. William and John, are thought to be cousins.

William was referred to as "Capt. William Hooper" in George Hosmer's "Historical Sketch of the Town of Deer Isle, Maine" (see source below) and as "yeoman" when in 1817 during probate the Court appointed him as administrator of his father's estate, his father being John Hooper of Deer Isle who died intestate. After settling his father's estate, which meant paying off his father's debts, William "acquired the right" to his father's property in Deer Isle. Per Hosmer (p. 92), William Hooper is identified on Peters's survey plan of Deer Isle as property owner of the same property his father had owned, i.e. the lot adjoining the Paul Pressey lot on the southeast side.

Leaving wife Elizabeth as a widow, William died on July 11, 1837 in Brooklin, Maine. About 7 months later, Elizabeth passed away. They are buried in the same plot, their graves marked with a joined headstone in the Brooklin Cemetery.

Research Notes:

1) Three Hooper aunts of William Hooper may have been enumerated in Scituate's 1790 Fed. Census, namely:

Aunt Mary (Hooper) Hyland [enumerated female in household of known husband William Hyland]
Aunt Elizabeth Hooper (unmarried) [head of household (HOH)]
Aunt Sarah Hooper (unmarried) [likely female living with sister Elizabeth, HOH]

Given the British occupation of Castine, Hancock County, Province of Maine, and danger thereof to residents of Deer Isle, Hancock County, it may have been a possibility that the young William Hooper, subject of this profile, went to live with his aunts in Scituate, thereby supporting young William's reported reference as having "emigrated to Deer Isle" from Scituate in its 1800 Fed. Census, while has father, John Hooper, reported that he "emigrated to Deer Isle" from Portland [ME].
