Biography

William was the son of Francis Hopkins and Mercy (Mary) Joslin. His first wife was Peace Scott, also said to be Amanda Peace Scott, who is said to have died in 1813, possibly in Bath, Kentucky. His second wife was Elizabeth Brinton who he married in 1815 in Bath County.

William's father Francis was known as a Tory in Virginia and some people have written that William was also involved in his father's activities. He also appears in DAR records as serving in New York.

William's will was proved in 1832. He mentions his second wife, "beloved Elizabeth" and names his seven youngest children - David, Peace, John, Joseph, Walter, Phebe, and Caroline. He appoints one of his older sons, Joslin Hopkins as Executor.

The children to his first wife were Richard, Henry, William, Mary-Ann (Polly), Abiah, Joslin, and Eldredge.

One reference states he was a surveyor in Lincoln, Clark and Nicholas counties.
