Biography

Walter Scott Hopkins was born on Thursday, April 7, 1881, in Lapeer Township, Cortland, Cortland County, New York, and was the second oldest child in a family of six children born to Stephen Bennett (Friday, August 6, 1847 - Sunday, March 21, 1926) and Caroline Scott Smith Hopkins (Wednesday, December 24, 1856 - Thursday, June 30, 1921). In addition to running a farm Walter's father was a constable and truant officer for Shippen Township in Cameron County, Pennsylvania. His parents were married on Saturday, August 23, 1879, in Lapeer Township, Cortland County, New York. Walter moved with his family from New York to Pennsylvania when he was four years old.

The following items were reported in the following 1899 Cameron County Press Thursday weekly newspapers:

February 9, page 5 - Walter Hopkins of Hopkinsville, is acting as assistant manager for A. Kresge.

February 16, page 4 - Walter Hopkins froze his fingers and ears while out driving last week.

March 23, page 5 - Walter Hopkins has resumed his duties as assistant manager on the trotting farm.

March 30, page 4 - Walter Hopkins has accepted a position on Mike Hellyard's strawberry farm.

April 20, page 5 - Walter Hopkins resigned his position as assistant manager on the Hellyard farm.

In the 1900 U.S. Census Walter's occupation was listed as being a day laborer.

Walter S. Hopkins never married. He was twenty years old at the time of his death on Monday, December 2, 1901, at Emporium, Shippen Township, Cameron County, Pennsylvania. He is buried at Newton Cemetery in Emporium, PA with his brother Lee, Lee's wife Sarah, and their son, Donald.
