John was born in 1843. He was the son of George Hopkins and Sarah Looney. When he was 7 years old he lived in Clinton, Kentucky, with his parents and siblings.[1]

John lived with his parents and siblings on their farm in Osceola, St. Clair County, helping his father, when he was 17 years old.[2]
In 1880, John was married to Martha Jane Browning., whose mother and father were from Tennessee, had three children and a nephew living with him. His is listed as a 'Grocer' on the Federal Census.[3]
John was an attorney and collecting agent. He enlisted in Company B, 16th Missouri Regiment, in the Confederate States Army. He was an newspaper editor and edited the St. Clair Democrat for three years. In 1866-67 he was the deputy sheriff of St. Clair County.[4]
John was a confederate soldier and part of the 2nd Regiment of the Kentucky Mounted Infantry. He was a Private
He passed away February 26, 1895 and is buried in the Appleton City cemetery.[5]
