Biography

Blagrove Hopper first appears in a Richmond County land grant in which Catherine, Lady Fairfax, Sole Proprietor of the Northern Neck of Virginia granted Blackgrove Hopper 246 acres lying on the head branches of Deep Run, 21 September 1715. Assuming the probability that Blagroves' name came from his mother, Richmond County records show that Henry Blaggrave of York County, son of Henry Blaggrave of New Kent County, was heir of Mansell Blaggrave (1706). On 2 October 1706, Henry Jennings, Attorney on behalf of Hen. Blackgrave, acknowledged a deed for land to Robert Wood and Thomas Wood.

Blagrove Hopper obtained, on 6 February 1730/1 another grant of land for 131 acres in Stafford County, adjoining his other tract on a branch of Deep Run.

The Prince William County rent rolls for 1737-39 an for 1753-54 show Blagrove Hopper with 375 acres of land. On 15 March 1755, his slave was declared a felon. (At this time, John Hopper was listed with 529 acres of land in 1737, 523 acres in 1738-39 and 230 acres in 1753-54.)

Blagrove Hopper was dead by 29 April 1768. On that date, George Hopper of Amherst County, and Thomas Hopper and Joseph Hopper of Fauquier County (sons of Blagrove Hopper-deceased), sold a tract of 80 acres for 50 pounds Virginia money--part of 248 acres which Blagrove Hopper obtained by patent from the Proprietors of the Northern Neck in 1715. The purchaser was Joseph Blackwell. Under the same date, an indenture was made in which George Hopper of Amherst Co. for and in consideration of natural love and affection he has unto Joseph and Thomas, his brothers, gave them land, reserving 130 acres to himself. Eighty was from what was called the Old Patent and 50 acres was from the new patent where Thomas Matthews lived. In October 1768, Joseph and Thomas Hopper divided the land given to them by George.

George Hopper and Elizabeth (X) Hopper were witnesses to a deed of trust between Staples and Key on 11 July 1764 in Amherst County.

Blagrove Hopper's wife's name is noted in an indenture drawn 5 January 1769. In it, Thomas Hopper and Anne Hopper, his mother, of Fauquier Co., sold to Joseph Blackwell 127 acres in Faquier Co., on the branches of Deep Run, part of a tract of land taken up and a patent obtained from the Proprietors of the Northern Neck of Virginia by Blagrove Hopper, father of Thomas. This patent of 85 1/2 acres with Joseph Hopper, Thomas Mathews. The witnesses were W. Blackwell, Charles Chinn, Thomas Matthews and Elizabeth Hopper.
