Biography

Hans Houk was born on 4 September 1704 in Messel, Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, the son of Hans and Barbara Houk.[1]
He married Juliana Vishering. She bore him two known children, a son and a daughter:
  1. George Houk
  2. Catharina Houk, born 1732..[2]

Or alternatively (more likely), he married Juliana Sophia Schwartz on July 22, 1732 in the Mimbach-Webenheim Reformed Church (see Research Notes below). [3]

A Hans Georg Hauk is shown as migrating to Pennsylvania in September 1733. (but see Research Notes below). [4] If Hans Georg Hauk and Hans George Jerrick Houk are the same person and migrated in 1733, this would mean that his daughter Sophia, who was born in 1732, was no doubt born before the family left Europe. ([[Prickett-120|pph] ],1 May 2015.)

Hans Georg Hauk migrated to Philadelphia on the Pennsylvania Merchant of London, John Stedman, master, from Rotterdam. on Sept 18, 1733. Adding to the likelihood that Hans Georg Hauk and Hans George Jerrick Houk were the same person is the fact that on the same ship were Mattheis Gisch (whose son Christian Lauer Gish, Sr., would marry Houk's daughter Catherina Sophia), Hans Lauer (Mattheis Gisch's nephew), (p91), Original list (p92) : Christian Louer, Hans Jerick Houk, Mathias Kish, The women included Caritas Vishering (Hans George Jerrick Houk's wife was Juliana Sophia Vishering before she was married and her mother's maiden name was Caritas). Children included Sophia Vishering, Elizabeth Vishering, Christian Vishering, Jerick Houk. This would seem to mean that Houk's wife, Juliana Sophia Vishering Houk, and daughter Catherina Sophia Hoch did not migrate at the same time.[5]

Research Notes

"Would very much appreciate any information on the descendants of Hans George Jerrick Houk and Juliana Sophia Vishering Schwartz. Hans was born in Messel, Hesse Darmstadt, Germany on September 4, 1704 to Hans and Barbara Houk. Juliana was born ca. 1705 to Christian Vishering and ? Caritas. Hans and Juliana’s children were George and Sophia. Sophia married Christian Gish in 1754 in Pennsylvania[.]
Juliana’s mother died in Pennsylvania. Juliana also had a sister Elizabeth and a brother Christian."

One Georg Hock has a profile in Annette Kunselman Burgert's Eighteenth Century Emigrants Volume II The Western Palatinate. He arrived on the Virtuous Grace, 1737, age 28. According to Burgert:

Mimbach-Webenheim Reformed KB:
Hans Gorg Hock, son of Andreas Hock of Webenheim, m. 22 July 1732 at Mimbach (marriage necessary) Juliana Sophia, daughter of Peter Schwartz of Webenheim. They had:
1. Catharina Sophia (Haack) bp. 5 Dec. 1732
2. Charlotha Elisabetha (Hock) bp. 28 Aug. 1735
ZMP: Zweibrucken, 1737
Hans Georg Hoch of Webenheim moves to America.[6]

Another Pennsylvania immigrant (to Warwick, Lancaster County) is thought to be a son of Andreas Hock of Webenheim: Johann Andreas Hock (1717-bef.1810). He does not appear in Burgert's book.

...

Also, a better fit for the Hans Georg Hauk who migrated to Philadelphia on the Pennsylvania Merchant in 1733 might be George Haag (abt.1701-1786). He was living on the Northkill by January, 1735 when he baptized his daughter Marie Susanna there.
