Biography

As this Harmanus House, the son of Conrad and Engelga, who eventually went to Clinton, Lincoln, Upper Canada, was born some time in the late 1740s and was having children in the 1760s, he should be dissociated from the earlier children given here, and the impossible birth date corrected. Some of these children may come from the line of his great-uncle Harmanus or from other Haus family members, whose baptisms were sponsored by him (Harmanus). Unfortunately these genealogies have not been constructed, and perhaps never can be.

See Melvin Rhodes Shaver, House Family of the Mohawk (Ransomville, N. Y., no date) Download for the connection of Harmanus through Conrad and Engelga and through George C "Jurrie" Haus. Conrad's other son Jonathan spoke of Harmanus as his brother, and some descendants of Conrad Haus have substantial amounts of Erhard DNA, which attests to the descent from Conrad Haus and not Conrad Christian Haus. The Harmanus Haus and some of his brothers attached to Conrad Christian Haus are duplicates of the Harmanus of this profile. It cannot be excluded, though, that besides the patriot sons of Conrad Christian Haus, there may have been others who were Tories and went to Canada.

See also Harmanus House Harmannus Haus There seems to be a problem distinguishing the various Harmanus Haus people and families.

Reinhardt Haus, the great-uncle of this Harmanus House, had children born in Tappen, near the New Jersey border in the 1720s, a location and time given for the birth of Harmanus in some genealogies. Schoharie Lutheran Church records from 1732 mention Haus family members especially those related to Jurrian (George). On October 18 1732 a Coonraad House and Christina Walraad sponsor a baptism. After 1737 the House family is no longer recorded at Schoharie. A record "A little girl of Herman Haus baptized Oct. 1, 1749." and a similar baptism of a son of Jurgen House a week later, has Shaver comment: "Without doubt the same Harman Haus and Jurrie Hause mentioned in Schoharie Church records in or about 1737, they having come into the Mohawk soon after that date."[1] The Harmanus who was the brother of Nicholas House, born 1769, must have belonged to a later generation. The children ascribed to Harmanus, however, were born beginning in the 1750s, and there does not seem to be a plausible way to reconcile all these dates. Shaver, though, gives the children of Harmanus House ("not a full record") as: "George, born June 28, 1773; Joseph, John, Engelga, Maria, born in 1780; Daniel and Anna Margaret, born August 23, 1796, who married a Joseph Smith."[2] So Shaver's dates, as far as they go, do fit a Harmanus who could be a son of Conrad and Engelga.

To be distinguished, then, are Harmanus I, the son of Johann Christian House, Harmanus II (this profile) the son of Conrad, son of George son of Johann Christian House, and the other House descendents called Harmanus because they were sponsored at baptism by Harmanus I and perhaps also II, which seem to exist in the Mohawk Valley. Harmanus II should have his birth dated probably about 1745.

From "Annals of the Forty" "The first member of this family to reach the American shores was Christian Haus. He came from Alpenter-Staden, Duchy of Salis, Germany with the Palatines, landing in New York in 1709. A year later he married Anna Catherine Becker, and they had six sons and two daughters.

In 1725 land at the junction of the Mohawk River and Little Canada Creek was deeded to a Christian House, a son of Christian Sr.

Conrad House, a descendent of Christian, wife Engelje (Angelina) had 5 sons: John, Harmanus (Harmonious), Christian, Nicholas and George. One history claims that Harmanus was the only Tory who fought with the British during the War of the Revolution, and as a Loyalist, emigrated to Canada. However, early records of Niagara give the names of Philip and George House, and in the War of 1812, Andrew, Frederick, and Patrick served with the 4th Lincoln Regiment and Nicholas House with the 2nd Lincoln Regiment.

In the statement of Archives headed - "Those heads of families (Butler's Rangers) at the settlement of Niagara, 1784.." Harmanus is mentioned - Head of family with one woman, three boys, and two girls.

Harmanus or Harmonious, as he was called, was granted land in Clinton Twp - lots 10 11, Concs. III and IV. This was the famous "Cave Springs" farm, where, at the top of the escarpment unique examples of Indian carvings were found. Only two remain and the faces, carved in solid rock, are believed to have been the work of the ancient Neutral Indians. Here in the caves under the cliffs ashes remain - proof of the Indian ovens in use several centuries ago. Many Indian relics have been found on the farm and in the vicinity.

Harmonious was an active member in the community life. He served on the first Municipal Council of Clinton Twp in 1793 as one of two town Wardens and as Poundkeeper. His name is on the voter's list in 1812 but not on the list of 1816 which would indicate he died sometime between those dates. It is said that he and his wife Margaretha were buried on the farm but the stones marking their resting place have long since been removed. "

How can this Hermanus be born 1725, son of Conrad born 1730? If Conrad had a son Hermanus, he would have to have been born much later than this man.

Should this Hermanus perhaps be detached and merged with Haus-191? There was definitely a Hermanus baptizing his children by 1751, but how could that Hermanus be son of Conrad & Engelge?

Haus-250 and Haus-134 appear to represent the same person because: duplicate
