Biography

Abraham (Abram) House was born October 27, 1811 in Columbia township, Herkimer, New York[1] and baptized December 25, 1811 at the German Flatts Reformed Church, German Flatts, Herkimer, New York[2] He was a farmer. He married Mary Bronson, probably about 1831. Her father may have been the minister at the short-lived Reformed Church of Warren about that time. They resided at Columbia, Herkimer, New York, probably near the present Elizabethtown Rd (county 43).[3][4][5] Some time between 1865 and 1870 they moved to Moravia, Cayuga, New York.[6] In January of 1867 he bought 100 acres at Cayuga from Clark Ames,[7] and in 1869 he bought 77.8 acres there from David Northrup.[8] After Mary died in 1876, Abraham married, by 1880, Sarah Ingram.[9] In 1881 he was a delegate from Columbia to the Herkimer County Democratic Convention. Utica Daily Observer, Tuesday Evening, Jan. 29. 1881. In 1888 Abraham participated in a 'Fresh Air Children' program where children, presumably from cities, would stay with country families during the summer. Moravia Valley Register, Friday Morning, Aug. 10, 1888. He died September 25, 1890 at Moravia, New York[10] and is buried in Mohawk Village Cemetery, German Flatts, Herkimer, New York, USA[11]

Alonzo married Emma J Ingram, who was about thirty years younger. About the same time as his father married Sarah Ingram. There followed a split in the House family with some of Alonzo's younger brothers and sisters returning to Herkimer county. The story passed down in Alonzo's family was that others had disapproved of his marrying a woman so much younger. The story passed down among those returning to Herkimer county was they did not get along with their father's new wife. Whatever the cause, Alonzo, Mary Etta and Nancy stayed in Cayuga county, while (Abraham) Bronson, Clarisa and Seward returned. Otis, (Asahel) Bronson and Cordelia Francenia had not made the move to Cayuga in the first place.
