Biography

Alvin House married Melinda Mahonnie (Mahoney) on 21 September 1829 in Bath County, Kentucky. Consent for the marriage, dated 21 September 1829, was signed with an "X" by Katharine Mahany and witnessed by John Jones and Larkin Turner.[1]

Although his father and several members of the family moved to Indiana about 1828[2] Alvin House remained in Kentucky. In the 1830 and 1840 census for Bath County, Kentucky Alvin House was living next door (on adjoining farms) to Uriah and Elizabeth (House) Wilson. Elizabeth was Alvin's sister.[3] [4]

Alvin and his family joined other members of the extended House family and were living in Mahaska County, Iowa by 1860. [6]

In the US Census 1880 he was listed on the census in Wapello Co., Iowa. Alvin House, 72, father-in-law, widowed, farmer, b KY/KY/KY living in the household of David C. Ward 51, farmer O/O/KY; Catherine, wife, 45, KY; Bertie, son 12 Iowa; Clara, dau 10 Iowa[7]

Alvin died after 1885 when he was shown on the State Census of Iowa as age 76, born Kentucky and living with Dock House, age 30, born Kentucky, (occupation Merchant clerk) in Kirkville, Wapello County, Iowa.
