Biography

1638 Birth and Parents

Saunders estimates that Matthew Howard, Jr was born ca. 1641, [1] in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia [2] the son of Matthew Howard, Sr, and his wife Anne.[3][4]

Newman states that Matthew Howard, Jr, son of Matthew Howard and his wife and Ann, was born in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia, about 1640. [5]

His birth year has been advanced to 1638, howevewr, to reflect that his father Matthew received a land grant that year for himself, his wife, and two children, and in a 1640 libel court case a reference is made to more than one child "crying" at home.

He was baptized in Lower Norfolk County on July 1, 1641. [5]

He often appears with "Gent" after his name [5] denoting his status as a "gentleman."

He was listed second of the children in the 1648 Richard Hall will. Mathew Howard the younger was named to receive "one Sow chote of a twelve month old" in the 1648 will of Richard Hall. [6]

1667 Marriage

Before 1667 Matthew Howard Jr married Sarah Dorsey or Darcy, daughter Edward Darcy/Dorsey of Virginia and Maryland, and the sister of Colonel Edward, Captain John, and Joshua Darcy (Dorsey). [5]

Sarah Dorsey was born, say 1650, the daughter of Edward Dorsey and his wife Ann. [10]

Sarah Dorsey, daughter of Edward and Ann Dorsey, married before 1667 Matthew Howard, Jr, probably born say 1641 in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia. He died testate in Anne Arundel County, Maryland between October 3, 1691, when his will was written, and January 19, 1694, when it was proved. [7]

Sarah died before 3 October 1691 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, the date her husband's will was written. [11]

1667 Maryland Land Demands

On May 7, 1667, Matthew Howard demanded of the Lord Proprietor land for the transportation of Sarah Darcy "now my wife" and nine other persons from Virginia to inhabit. he subsequently was granted 500 acres.[5]

1691 Will and Death

Death

Matthew Howard, Jr, died between 3 October 1691 and 12 January 1691 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland [12] Note that in this time period, the New Year began on March 25, and by today's accounting 12 January 1691 would be 12 January 1692.

Matthew Howard died the later part of the year 1691. [5]

Will

Matthew Howard, Jr. made his will 23 October 1691. It was proved January 19, 1694. [13]

Probate

"His will was submitted to probate in Anne Arundel County on January 12, 1692. Inasmuch as his wife was not mentioned in his will, it is reasonable to assume that she preceded him to the grave."[5]
