Steven M. Howell was born 10 Oct 1840[1] in Mississippi[2][3][4][5][6][7] to William Howell and Elizabeth McLemore.[8][9]

He married Mary[5][6] Matilda Isabell[3] Johnston about 1866[2][10] and the couple had the following known children:

  1. Martha A.[3] Howell was born about 1867 in Mississippi.[10]
  2. William W. Howell was born about 1869 in Mississippi.[10]
  3. Sarah J. Howell was born about 1869 in Mississioppi.[3]
  4. Colon Howell was born about 1870 in Mississippi.[3]
  5. Frances T. Howell was born about 1875 in Mississippi.[10][3]
  6. Laura Howell was born about 1878 in Mississippi.[3]
  7. Caroline L. G. "Carrie" Howell was born about 1880 in Mississippi.[7]
  8. John Howell was born Aug 1882 in Mississippi.[2]
  9. George C.[5] "Willie"[6] Howell was born Oct 1885 in Mississippi.[2]

Steven enlisted in the Confederate States Army and served in Company B of the 46th Mississippi Infantry during the Civil War.[1]

On 06 Jan 1872 he appears in the tract book for Covington County, Mississippi for #5835, containing 81.12 ares which was cancelled on 06 Jan 1881. The number is adjacent to his father's of the same date, and both were cancelled on the same date.[11] On 15 Oct 1889 he appears in the tract book again for #20,154 containing 159.96 acres which he patented on 21 Feb 1895 (v.18 p394)[11] described as The S1/2 of the NW 1/4 of Section 10 T9N R15W, the NE1/4 of the SE1/4 of Section 9, T9N R15W and the SE1/4 of the NE1/4 of Section 9, T9N, R15W.[12]

He appears on the 1881 Personal Tax List for Smith County, Mississippi in the town of Zion Hill.[13]

Steven died 03 May 1940 and is buried in Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Mize, Smith County, Mississippi.[1]
