He was a farmer. In 1820 and 1830 Jonathan Howery was listed on the censuses of Montgomery County (as Jonathan Hawery and Jonathan Howrey). He seems to have moved to Floyd County about 1834. On 31 March 1834 Jonathan Howry and his wife Sally, described as being "of Floyd County" joined with his brothers Daniel and Phillip and with his sister Elizabeth in conveying 10 acres in Floyd County to John Epperly. They each signed the deed with an "x."[1] Wood says that Jonathan moved from Montgomery to Floyd County, Virginia between 1835 and 1840. The 1840 census shows him in Floyd County, with 11 in his family. He appears on the 1850 census as Jonethan Houring in the West District of Fayette County, now West Virginia. In 1860 and 1870 he appears on the census in Raleigh County, now West Virginia. His widow and heirs are shown by a deed dated 6 November 1874 in which they sold property.[2]
