Note NI30356His date of birth is also given as 10 October 1820, and his date of death as 10 December 1907 (Robillard). He was a farmer. He purchased 160 acres of land with his brother Thomas in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin in 1875. He built the first house in what became Leeds, North Dakota. He became the first Postmaster there and his home was the first Post Office. 1

The Frank and William Howery named in the Leeds paper in 1898 were his sons: "North Dakota Bailer Explosion. GRAND FORKS, N.D., Sept. 12 -- Frank HOWERY's threshing machine engine blew up near Leeds, Benson county, instantly killing H. M. SMITH, seriously injuring Frank and William HOWERY and wounding six others. Fragments of the boiler were scattered in every direction. Cause of explosion unknown." (Bismarck Daily Tribune, Bismarck, North Dakota, 12 September 1898).
