Mary was born in 1802 in Argyll, Scotland. She was the daughter of William Howie and Janet Picken [1]

She married Hugh Reid in 1835 [2]

In 1837 the Reids came to the United States and were one of the first families to settle what would become the Scottish Settlement at Argyl. [3][4][5][6]

They had three children, the youngest, James was the first boy to be born at the settlement.

  2. William Howie 1837-1918
  3. James S 1840 - 1927

When Alexander McDonald and his wife Margaret died, leaving six young children, the Reids took in James. [7]

Mary passed away in 1885.

Obituary

Died - At her late residence on Saturday morning, at 3 a. m., Mrs. Hugh Reid, aged about 84 years. The funeral was held Sunday at the house, where a large concourse of people gathered to pay their last respects to a kind neighbor and true friend. There were teams in the procession from the house to the cemetery. [8]
