Biography

Charles was born in 1856, son of John Washington Huddleston and Harriet Babbitt.
Charles married Mary Melinda Reed on September 5, 1880, near Hardin, Ray County, Missouri. [1]
Not sure where Charles father died. Family story handed down from generations that he traveled from Hardin, Missouri to California twice. This was during the Gold Rush. Not sure of the years, but the second time he didn't return home. He left behind his wife, Harriet and four children, Elizabeth, Frances C. “Christine”, Charles Blackburn and Martha Jane "Jennie". John W. Huddleston died in 1858.
Charles mother, Harriet, eventually remarried to Allen Martin. He had three older sons and two younger daughters from a previous marriage. As Charles grew up it became apparent that he did not get along with his older step-brothers. Francis Marion House was a close friend of the family and a circuit riding preacher. He took Charles to live with him for a while. The children called him Uncle Marion and he was probably a very important influence on Charles early life. [2]
In March 1887 Charles and Mary Huddleston arrived in Traver, California on an immigrant train from Missouri. The Transcontinental Railroad was completed 18 years earlier in 1869. [3] All their belongings were loaded on a compartment in a box car where they cooked, ate and slept for a week on the journey westward. The train fare for his family was $15. Their son, John was 5 years old and their daughter, Gertie was under two years old when they boarded that train to California. [4]
The family spent the next summer (1888) in the mountains at the Grant Grove-Millwood Creek area of California, where Charles worked in a redwood lumber mill, making shingles. It was there that he came to be slightly acquainted with Chris Evans of Evans and Sontag (outlaw) fame,[5] ,who brought supplies by wagon from the valley. [6]
Once Charles and Mary settled in Kingsburg they raised five more children: Myrtle Mary, Iva Ethel, Clair Franklin, Mable Olive, (died as a child), and Hugh Reed.
Charles was a farmer all his life and grew fruit trees, grapes and alfalfa fields in the bountiful San Joaquin Valley.
Charles had only a third-grade formal education, but he read much and his knowledge of the world around him and current global events validated him as an educated man. The Fresno Morning Republican kept him informed on a daily basis. In a kind of informal way, he was a very religious man. He knew the Bible well, because on many occasions he would discuss biblical passages. Many occasions he and his oldest son John Samuel would get into heated displays of differences. He had a stentorian voice and could be heard, when animated, a mile away. [7]
Charles died on April 26, 1935 in Kingsburg, California.
