Biography

Winnifred Champion was born in 1707 Northumberland Co., Virginia. She was the daughter of John Champion and Elizabeth Williams of Northumberland Co. Virginia.

Winifred was married three times. She married her first husband, Thomas Hudnall of Prince William Co., Virginia, before 1731 in Lancaster, Virginia. They would have a son, William Thomas Hudnell, born April 13, 1732, in Hamilton, Prince William County, Virginia, died January 31, 1813, in Bedford County, Virginia. He married Frances Smith, born October 7, 1736, in St James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia, a daughter of Colonel John M. Sterling Smith and Susannah Raison.

Thomas Hudnell died in 1740, in Prince William County, Virginia. His Will is dated 1738, and with probate date of 1740, names his brother Joseph as Executor and mentions his three brothers and one sister but not by name. "Wife Winney Hudnall. Son William Hudnall (underage) three brothers and sisters (not named). Executors: Brother Joseph Hudnall and wife Winney Hudnall. Witnessed: Benjamin Berryman, Elizabeth French."[1]

Her second marriage was to Rene Napier on 24 November 1740 in Prince William Co., Virginia. Rene wrote his will 30 October 1750 and it was proved 19 November 1751. He named his children and wife in his will.

Their three children were:

Ezekial East born about 1751 in Virginia. Listed in Virginia Land Records, Goochland County Deeds and Wills, p. 77 as son of Winnifred East, wife of Thomas East, and brother of James East.
James East born August 10, 1753, in Virginia, died October 4, 1844, in Rockbridge, Virginia, married Martha Clarkson.[4]
Thomas East, IV, also known as "Thomas the Orphan" who married Obedience East.[5]

In 1757, Winifred was named in a lawsuit which was lodged after Rene Napier's will had undergone probate with her being named as Executrix. Appended to the documents pertaining to the lawsuit is a note that "Winefred Napier, since commencement of this suit, intermarried with Thomas East."[6]

In a deed dated 7 Aug. 1777 in Fluvanna Co., Virginia, John Napier gave 30 acres and house "whereon Thomas Glass lives" to Winnie East, wife of Thomas East for her lifetime. He also gave Ezekial East and James East, her sons, 85 acres each.[7]
