Biography

EDWARD W. AND SUSANNA A. HUFF OF KY AND LA

Edward W. HUFF (June 1844 KY - ) md Angie B. "Susannah" Haner (1852 LA - ) and lived mostly in Vermillion Parish, LA. He was the son of T. L. and Sarah HUFF of VA, MD, KY, and LA.

One death notice gives his DOB as 14 June, not 6 June as entered here.

Same notice says he moved to Vermilion in 1869. "He was High Sheriff one term, and Deputy Sheriff for many years."

He is probably the Edward W Huff who served in the Confederate Second Calvary, 1864.[1] He would have been 20 years old.

A notice in the Meridonial says he was baptised in the Episcopal Church in 1895.[2] He gets dozens of mentions in the Meridional throughout his life in Vermilion Parish in his capacity as police constable, commander of the United Confederate Veterans, and private citizen.

In 1900, the wife was shown as Annie B. (Mar 1852 LA - ), a corruption of Susanna B[[ailey].

A notice in the [Abbeville] Meridonial[3] notes that he was paid $25 as a constable to the Justice of the Peace. Probably quarterly pay, as an earlier notice in the same paper from 1900 says he was elected to this position at $80/year, paid quarterly. He served several times as constable of the police jury in the Parish (see accompanying clips).

In 1910,the children are erroneously shown with the surname Hudson because of a transcription error. In fact they are all Huffs. Hudson is the married name of Katherine Belle Huff.
