Biography

Samuel HUFF (c 1783 VA - after 1840, poss in Southern MS) grew up in Southwestern VA. On 2 May 1804 in Montgomery Co, VA, he md Anne WILEY, dau of Alexander and Margaret (CALLAHAN) WILEY of Montgomery Co, VA. Philip HUFF, his father, gave consent, as Samuel was still a minor. Henry HUFF, his brother, and George SNUFFER, his brother-in-law, were witnesses (Book A:102). Samuel and Anne began their family in Montgomery Co, VA; but they later joined Samuel's brothers in South-central KY. In 1809, they were still in Montgomery Co, as they sued Mary DEWEESE for $1500 for saying in public that Anne HUFF had stolen a cowhide. Anne (WILEY) HUFF was alive in 1822 as she was mentioned in Alexander WILEY's will of Dec, 1822, probated in Montgomery Co, VA. Samuel HUFF was mentioned in Philip HUFF's will which was proved in the Feb, 1823 court, in Montgomery Co, VA.

Samuel and Anne HUFF records in South-central KY / TN can be confused with at least two other families. Samuel and Sarah (HIX) HUFF were in the area as members of the Old Mulkey Church, now in Monroe Co, in the 1792-99 time period. Their son, Samuel HUFF and his wife Mary (PROCTER) HUFF were also in the area. Samuel and Sarah seem to have died in TN, but Samuel and Mary moved on to IL. In 1806, Samuel HUFF was granted 150 acres on Spring Creek of Cumberland Co, KY. This could have been one of the above Samuels or some other, as Samuel and Anne were still in Montgomery Co, VA, most likely.

By 1810, there was a Samuel HUFF family in Cumberland Co, KY, with a household of five others which could be Samuel and Anne. By 1820, the other Samuel HUFF, Jr, was in IL, and Samuel HUFF, Sr, in TN. The household likely to be this Samuel HUFF, in Cumberland Co in 1820, was quite large, 220110-31010. If this was the family of Samuel and Anne, and all were her children, it meant 8 children in 16 years, probably par for the course. Before 1820, this Samuel HUFF was one of 8 trustees in the founding of the town of Paoli, KY, named for those Rev. War soldiers massacred by the British at Paoli, PA. This area of Paoli is now part of Albany, present county seat of Clinton Co., Kentucky.

Available records at this point in time become very confusing. There was a Samuel HUFF estate settled in the 1823 era, and it is not clear whether this was the land left by a Samuel HUFF, deceased, or by a Samuel HUFF who had left the area. The county sheriff sold the Paoli lots and some other land which had belonged jointly to Samuel HUFF and Daniel HUFF. Daniel HUFF was an older brother to the Samuel HUFF who md Anne. Some Spring Creek property belonging to Daniel and Samuel HUFF was sold to John DUEASE (DEWEESE). It appears that Daniel and Samuel HUFF, and possibly also another brother Philip HUFF, were partners, and that there may have been business troubles (perhaps a bankruptcy) around this time. It was during this period that one Samuel Huff, who had property on Spring Creek in Cumberland Co, KY, moved to Jackson Co, AL. On 23 Feb 1831, Samuel HUFF of Jackson Co, AL, sold to Polly LONG land on Spring Creek in Cumberland Co, KY.

Samuel HUFF moved to Jackson Co, AL, before 1830, and settled in the southwestern portion of the county. He purchased land there in 1832 and 1835, along with his probable son, Alanson HUFF. They lived there in 1840, but had moved on to MS or other places by 1850. Alanson HUFF said his father, not named, died in South Mississippi. It seems most likely that the Samuel who moved to Jackson Co, Al, was the person who had md Anne WILEY, but the 1830 ages are not compatible. The 1840 ages would be fairly compatible.

In 1830, there had been 6 males and 5 females, but by 1840, there were only 2 males and one female in the household. One who can be identified was Alanson, who lived near Samuel in 1840. Alanson stated that his father went to South MS and died there. There were brief records for a Samuel HOUGH in Jasper Co, MS, which do not fit in with the known HOUGH families of the area.

Possible children:

  1. Arthur Alanson (Arthur as his first name still not certain--seems unlikely and may have been confused with a later person of this name--please add a source if there is one. He seems to have been recorded as Alanson, which may also appear spelled Elenson or other phonetically similar spellings. (10 Apr 1810 KY - 9 Apr 1860 MS) on 1 May 1837 md Eliza E. Hamilton BEAN. They moved to Tishomingo Co, MS, in 1841. Ch incl Manerva J.; James Burney; Martha A.; Russell Bean HUFF; Elizabeth C. HUFF; William B. HUFF; and Mary HUFF. Most of these children went on to TX after the Civil War. Alanson HUFF and his family were Cumberland Presbyterians, a sect which developed on the Cumberland River frontier in KY.

At least two HUFF families show up in MS and AR in the 1840 decade when the Indian lands were being settled; and these may have been sons of Samuel of Jackson Co, AL. Mathew and Elias [James Elias] HUFF showed up in Coahoma Co, MS, in the 1840 decade. Mathew HUFF settled there, but Elias went on to AR, where he had a family in Jackson and Woodruff counties. Either the family tradition or the result of early research showed Elias HUFF to be son of James S. HUFF of VA and KY. The referenced James S. HUFF may have been the one in Harlan Co, KY, and may not have been correctly identified as a parent.

The families of these two plausible (but still uncertain) sons of Samuel HUFF were:

?? James Elias HUFF, went by Elias (19 Jan 1813 KY - 24 Sep 1873 AR) md (1) Nancy ??? (1822 KY - ), who may have had son Alexander GOBEL (1845 AR) from a previous marriage. In 1854, Elias md (2) Sarah Jane COUCH (10 Jan 1840 MS - 4 Apr 1901 AR), dau of Gabriel and Sarah COUCH, and they lived in Woodruff Co, AR. Ch incl; James Louis HUFF; Napoleon "Poly" HUFF; Sarah Annie HUFF; Samuel HUFF; Virginia September HUFF; Daniel Henry HUFF; and Della Minerva HUFF. (Note: a Y-DNA test involving, unfortunately, a deceased person who tested as well as deceased test manager, makes it appear that Elias HUFF was indeed a son--or very close relative--of Samuel HUFF).

?? H. Mathew HUFF (1825 KY - ) md Sarah Jane ??? (1831 RI - ), and their ch incl Ann HUFF; Mary HUFF; and Martha HUFF. What happened to this family after 1860 is not known.

Huff lineage is Samuel and Anne (Wiley) Huff of VA, KY, and AL; Philip and Rachel (Unknown) Huff of VA;

  • 1787 Botetourt Co, VA, Philip Huff on tax lists.
  • 1788 Montgomery Co, VA, Philip Huff on tax lists.
  • 1800
  • 1803/1807 Montgomery Co, VA. In 1802, 1805, and 1807, there were bonds posted to secure the appointment of Samuel Huff as Constable. Alexander Wylie was one of those supporting this appointment, which might suggest the Samuel Huff was his son-in-law; however, the age of Samuel at that time does not seem suitable for such a task. He would have been about 21 in 1804. There was another, older Samuel Huff in the same area.
