Elijah Dawson Hume was christened December 4, 1757 in Manchester, England, the son of Sherman and Ann Dawson Hume (Hulme) [1]

His siblings [2] included:

  1. Abraham, born 1745
  2. Elizabeth, born 1747
  3. Isaac, born 1749
  4. Sherman, born 1750
  5. Mary, born 1753
  6. Charles, born 1754
  7. Ann, born 1756
  8. Jesse, born 1761
  9. Prudence, born 1762
  10. Patience, born 1762
  11. Peter, born 1765

He left the manufacturing center of Manchester, England - the later ground zero for the industrial revolution - to set out for the American Colonies at the ripe old age of 16. He arrived in Philadelphia in 1773, just as things were getting stirred up for revolt against British rule. He spent some time in the counties of New Jersey most known for Loyalist sentiments, where we also find the surnames of families he and his descendants would later intermarry with - Compton being one example. When war broke out he served on the British side with the 1st New Jersey Volunteers from 1778-1783.

This extract is from research by Keith Hume, 1995: Eli first appears, as a HUME, in listings of the soldiers that fought against the “rebel” Americans. He enlisted as a private in Taylor’s Company of the 1st New Jersey Volunteers in 1776. It was while fighting on the Loyalist side that he met an officer called LAMB. Lamb made him promise that should anything happen to him he would look after his wife and son Joseph. Subsequently Lamb was killed, and true to his word Eli kept his promise to his friend and married his widow Ann (Annie). Annie’s son Joseph retained his father’s name of Lamb.

After the war, he received a land grant of town lot #951 in Parrtown (present day St. John) New Brunswick. He is found in the 1783 Census for New Brunswick. He married the widow of Joseph Lamb, Ann Williams, and had 5 children that survived to adulthood:

  1. Peter, (1787 - ABT. 1850)
  2. George, (1789 - AFT. 1850)
  3. John Dawson, (1791 - 17 NOV 1855)
  4. Ann and (4 NOV 1795 - 28 NOV 1881)
  5. Rebecca, (1798 - 1878), who married Reuben Hoben

He submitted a petiton for land in May 1814 (possibly as reward for service in the War of 1812) He moved with his son John Dawson to Manchester, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia where he passed away in 1814.[3]

MY NOTE: Did he die of wounds suffered in the War of 1812? He would have been only 55 when that war broke out and seemed to have been very patriotic, so I think that is a good line of investigation. 57 is rather young to die of natural causes. - Deborah

Sources

Much of the biographical narrative was taken from a Hume family history tree. Since it is not otherwise sourced, I will look for sources for these details.

Here's the deal on the sources in their present state: I presently do not have an active subscription at Ancestry to access source documents. I plan to get that reactivated end of May and improve these sources. This list is to let researchers know what records exist, which is the best I can do at present.

His service in New Jersey volunteers needs to be researched, as well as his possible involvement in the War of 1812. Hopefully I will be able to get to this research very soon and get Elijah's profile into its proper project.
