Notes to Researchers

Added by G. Pinson (Pinson-796) on 4 July 2021.
  • While the LDS (Familysearch.org) generically classifies all Revolutionary War period pay vouchers as for "Military Service", there is no evidence that Memucan Hunt was ever actually involved in the army or militia.

Memucan and his sons, William in particular, were involved in procuring supplies for the troops. Besides that, Memucan was kept quite busy in his dealings in the legislature and as one of three regional treasurers at the time. However, due to his activities in procurement, he was the recipient of dozens of vouchers, many of which can be viewed on the Familysearch.org website.

Proof of Marriage / Spouse

Added by G. Pinson (Pinson-796) on 4 July 2021.
  1. Memucan Hunt’s proven grandson (by daughter Jane (Hunt) Howard), Memucan Hunt Howard stated: "My grandfather, Memucan Hunt....His wife. Mary (Polly) Wade..."(Citation needed)
  2. Halifax County, VA marriage bonds show: Mary Wade and Memucan Hunt 9 March 1754; surety Robert Hunt.
  3. In his will, Robert Wade Sr. of Anheim Parish, Halifax County, Virginia bequeaths 50 pounds to his daughter Mary Hunt, having previously given her a slave. …He appointed his son Edward Wade and two son in laws, Memucan Hunt and William Stokes as executors. (Citation Needed) (Quotation Marks for direct quotes and where they came from)

Proof of Parentage

Added by G. Pinson (Pinson-796) on 4 July 2021.
  1. Memucan Hunt’s proven grandson (by daughter Jane (Hunt) Howard), Memucan Hunt Howard (born 1798), on the request of a relative compiled a family history on his Hunt and Howard lines. This was later printed by a younger relative, B.H. Howard.
On page 32 of the book, Memucan Hunt Howard makes the following statements: “RALPH HUNT, my great grandfather, was born 1693. and died Jan. 8th, 1780. Dinah Anderson, his wife, was born 1699, and died 1769. My grandfather, Memucan Hunt, their third son, was born Aug. 23d, 1729, and died 1808.”(Citation needed; what "book"?)
  1. In his will, Memucan Hunt names his grand daughter Polly Anderson Hunt and later, in court, Memucan’s son and executor, Thomas Hunt, makes a statement to the effect that he can’t distribute property until the estate is settled and when it is Polly Anderson Hunt will get what was promised. Was Anderson Polly Hunt’s middle name? If so, was she named after her great grandmother’s Anderson line?
  1. Memucan Hunt apparently had both a brother and a son named Anderson Hunt. Was this naming after his alleged mother Dian Anderson’s line?
  1. When Ralph Wade purchased Lunenburg Co. VA land from Seth Pettypool in 1748 Memucan Hunt's father in law, Robert Wade, witnessed the deed. (14) (Citation needed)

Proof of Parentage for Mary (Wade) Hunt

Added by G. Pinson (Pinson-796) on 4 July 2021.
  1. Halifax County VA marriage bonds show: Mary Wade and Memucan Hunt 9 March 1754; surety Robert Hunt. This proves his wife was a Wade, before marriage.(Citation needed) (Does it prove it was a maiden name or does it say if she had prior marriages?)
  1. This proves he was Mary (Wade) Hunt’s father.(Citation needed)
  1. Mary (Wade) Hunt’s proven grandson (by daughter Jane (Hunt) Howard), Memucan Hunt Howard (born 1798), wrote: “Memucan Hunt…His wife. Mary (Polly) Wade, was born Sept. 3d. 1736, and died 1825. Her brother, Charles Wade, was born March 14th, 1733. Her sister. Sarah Wade, was born July 16th, 1739 and married a Mr. Stokes. Their brother, Edward Wade, was born Jan. 27th, 1744.( Citation needed)
  1. Note: When a sibling is proven, barring a non paternal event (NPE. An unknown adoption, name change or infidelity), the proof of parentage for one sibling falls to the other. Here her grandson names three of Mary’s siblings.

Proof of Children:

Added by G. Pinson (Pinson-796) on 4 July 2021.
  1. Menucan Hunt’s will names deceased son John Hunt, as well as John’s sons
  2. Menucan Hunt’s will also names sons Thomas, William and Edward Hunt and daughters Sally Smith, Elizabeth Falconer (Mrs. Thomas Falconer), Polly Butler, Jane Howard and Nancy Graves, as well as a number of grandchildren. Note: The will did not name Anderson Hunt as a son, because Anderson had committed suicide before 1799, but Anderson’s nephew Memucan Hunt Howard did name him. Memucan Hunt’s will doesn't name a son Nathaniel either, although he did have a grandson Nathaniel, heir of deceased son John.(Citation needed)
  3. Several heirs are seen buying property at Menucan Hunt’s including “Nat Hunt” who purchased “the Manor plantation” per the 1810 records. “Nat Hunt” is probably Menucan Hunt’s grandson Nathaniel, son of John Hunt, deceased.
  1. Memucan Hunt Howard, Memucan Hunt’s proven grandson via daughter Jane (Hunt) Howard, compiled a pedigree of his family listing the ten children of his grandparents, Memucan and Mary (Wade) Hunt and giving their birth dates and death years. (Pedigree or Citation missing)

I've got an ironclad pedigree back to Memucan from his son John, his son Nathaniel, his son Nathaniel, his son A.D. Hunt and his daughter Roxanne Elizabeth (Hunt) Pinson. Through autosomal DNA, I also match to others with claimed descent from Memucan et ux as follows (all on Ancestrydna.com):

1) Aaron Peters who descends through Memucan's son Anderson and his son Anderson. Our match 11 cM over 1 segment. 2) "williams7249" though Memucan daughter Sarah. Our match 13 cM over 1 segment. 3) Kaila Keller through Memucan's son and his son Edward Fenton Hunt and his son Edward Fenton Hunt Jr. Our match 9 cM over 1 segment.

This would appear to pass Wiki's requirement for DNA proof of descent which requires triangulation (3 matches each with at least 1 segment with a minimum of 7 cM).

But, the point of this post, is to encourage others descended from Memucan to post their DNA matches with others who share Memucan and wife Mary Wade as Most Recent Common Ancestors. That will add mutual proof of paternity for the children we descend through.

I just adopted Mary (Wade) Hunt's profile and I believe these two husbands represent the same person.

Hey Stephen,

I am trying to see if I can make a connection to this gentleman via a couple of DNA matches. They are distant, but worth looking into since I have found three of his descendants that I have a matches with. So I will need to do some work to add information to he and his lines to further my research.

Yell if you need me.
