    • " 13 May 2004 Dear Phil and Julia We just got back from two weeks in Europe for matters concerning Irma's family. Her uncle isn't doing well at all. He was such a strong man, but now he is suffering from Parkinson's disease. When we think of that disease, we think of one shaking. He doesn't shake, but his feet just don't do what his brain tells them to do. It is a real heart breaker. We were dependent upon her family and public transportation for transportation and were unable to meet Hans. We really wish we could have. Two weeks are not long enough to do everything we wanted to do. I had spent seven years in Germany. As long as my fluency in that language continues, I shall continue to correspond with him in German. We don't have any pictures. This is information we collected on our own and, until recently, haven't shared with anybody. In 1962, we were visiting Irma's older brother who lived in Breisach. That is right on the German-French border just a few miles from where our grandfather was born. At that time, there was some uncertainty as to whether he came from Colmar or Horbourg. Since Horbourg didn't appear on our map, one Sunday afternoon we headed for Colmar. When we entered the village of Horbourg, a suburb of Colmar, we got out of the car and walked around the cemetery a few minutes. It was not long before the Husser graves started appearing wholesale. The next day, Irma and I returned there and met with an official at the Maison de Ville. She pulled out some huge books with the following information handwritten in the old alphabet. Our grandfather, Johann Husser, was born Feb 2, 1833 His mother, Ursula Husser, was born Jan 9, 1812 Her parents were Johann und Barbara Husser. He died Nov 13, 1840 and she Nov 20, 1844. Our great grandmother's siblings were: Matthias born and died Mar 11, 1814, Marie Barbara born Mar 11, 1816, Matthias born Mar 18, 1818, and Jacque born Jul 30, 1820. Our great grandmother married Johann Jakob Schuler in 1848. The date of his birth is uncertain. He was a widower and had a daughter from his previous marriage, Katharin Schuler born in 1824. This is all the information that we were able to obtain at that time. We have not tried to pursue the issue any further. So far as I know, Hans and Don McKee are the only ones we have given it to. There may be some problems with some of the names on the list. I know that English, French and German versions of our grandfather's name appear on different documents, i.e. John, Jean or Johann. Hopefully, this information will be of some help to you. I don't know how much of it is available on the Internet. I am only sharing information that we got from the primary source. Eventually, we may search the Internet, but not now. I still need to organize the information that I have in a paper file. James and Irma

    • "Hi cousins, may I take a little bit of your precious time to report on my call to the townhall of Horbourg, last week. As usual, there is good news and bad news. Let's start with the bad one. The (friendly) clerk who I had arranged my appointment with (Mrs. Carlier) had questioned me on the phone already about the items I wanted to look for - in order to prepare the documents / books / registers. However, the tome she came up with (events after 1793) showed no single Husser-birth between 1804 (parents' marriage) and 1812 (birth of Jean's mother Ursula). P.m. Thanks to James' earlier search we knew about Ursula born 9.1.1812 Matthias b. 10.3.1814 (*) Marie Barbe b. 10.3.1816 (*) Matthias II b. 18.3.1818 Jacques b. 30.7.1820 (*) both were born on March 10, but the births were declared on March 11 only. Phil, kindly adjust your documentation accordingly. Also: the birth certificate does call Jean's mother not Ursula, but simply Ursel. While an incoming call occupied the clerk, I looked through the reminder of the tome. The only Husser appearances were the deaths of Jean's grand-parents (1840 and 1844). When I pointed to the clerk that even the marriage (1804, with copy sent to us some months ago) was not mentioned in this tome, she thought for a moment or two and came to the evident conclusion: there might be other tomes. In an old cupboard we found it: births between 1800 and 1810. And here we go (= the good news): Maria Catherina born 18th Floréal of the 13th year of the Revolution (= 8.5.1805) Anna Maria b. 21.5.1807 Jean b. 9.5.1810 Kindly note that Catherina respectively Maria were the forenames by which these girls were known. In the second tome (1811-1820) I could locate the above mentioned line ranging from Ursula to Jacques. Could it be that James had been shown the second tome only - and the line might continue in a third tome? The clerk was cooperative enough to bring the 1821-1830 tome as well. And indeed: Michel b. 1.10.1823 Salomée b. 26.10.1825 There the "production line" seems to have come to an end. In order to avoid a potential future confusion: another Husser (a Jacques with his wife Anne Marie) had children born in Horbourg (births starting1824 with father Jacques' age given as 24 years by then). Please do not hesitate contacting me should you have any question or comment to those findings. Take care, Hans
