Family History

Wade Gist was born May 23, 1896 in Moniteau County to Alfred Wade Gist and Cora Lee Howard Gist. His family consisted of Sudie, Howard and Wade (identical twins), and John. According to the obituary appearing in the county paper Alfred Wade (Alf) was member of the county highway commission when it was created in 1927. He helped lay out the present farm to market system in Moniteau County, Alfred Wade and Cora Lee spent all their married life on a farm close to Highland Cemetery where they are buried.

Mary Florence Hutchison, born July 11, 1899 Moniteau County was the daughter of David Henry Hutchison and Clarissa Angeline Smith. Her siblings consisted of Sally Ann (Mrs. Lee Hill), and a sister who died in infancy. David Hutchison was a stockman and trader who was known for his fine mules. Florence recalls that her father made weekly trips to St. Louis by train. She also recalls that his mules were used to pull the hearse for many funerals. David and Clarissa spent their married life on a farm near Pilot Grove school and were respected and admired by friends and neighbors in the Flag Spring Community. Wade and Florence were married December 21, 1915 in Montieau Coutny. Wade was not a barber, probably more by necessity, having six sons and five daughters. However, he did not limit his haircutting to family members. Many of his realtives and neigbors sat under his apron. Florence worked hard at home raising a large family and after Wade died in 1947, she worked as a cook for the Latham School district for several years.

Their children in order of birth are 1. Dixie Ruth (Mrs. Walter Allee) - 2. Richard Preston - 3. Truman Lee (died: 1935) - 4. Dorothy Claudine (Mrs. Bill Abernathey) - 5. Lotis Adele (Mrs. Wilbur Newkirk - 6. Margaret (Mrs. Tom Leftwich) - 7. Dean Atkins (died: 1951) - 8. Olive Frances (Mrs. Warren Pettigrew) - 9. Alfred Wade - 10. Gerald Hutchison - 11. Larry Dale. There are twenty-five grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and one great great grandchildren.

Florence is now 81 years old and lives in the Senior Housing Apartmernts in California, Missouri. Only one of her children, Dixie, lives in Moniteau County. Florence spends much of her time keeping in touch with old acquaintances and has formed new friendships since moving to California. ----- Submitted and prepared by Frances Gist Pettigrew.

Information Source: Death certificates began being recorded statewide in 1910 and are closed for 50 years before they are transferred to the Missouri State Archives. They provide valuable information for family historians and researchers including date of birth; names of parents and spouse; cause of death; occupation; and funeral home and burial information. --- People are often surprised to learn that the most popular documents in our collection are the more than 2.5 million death certificates. You can find death certificates of famous Missourians such as John William “Blind” Boone and Laura Ingalls Wilder; but you can also find out a lot of information about your own family history. If you have questions or comments about these records, please contact the Missouri State Archives at archref@sos.mo.gov.
