Elijah HYLTON was born Apr 2, 1743 in VA, and died 8 Sep 1798 in Montgomery Co., VA. He was the son of George Hylton and Ester. He was supposedly a Revolutionary War soldier that fought with George Washington. The Hylton and Washington plantations were not far from one another along the river.
Buried in Old Topeco Cemetery, Floyd County, Virginia, in an unmarked grave, the cemetery is on a one-acre portion of Elijah's former 1,000 acre plantation - one of the founding land grants in the county. Elijah is therefore viewed as a prominent ancestor and early citizen. Elijah was a very prominent man in Virginia in the late 1700's and early 1800's.
A chapter, “The Hylton Family in Virginia", from a book on the Hyltons said this about Elijah:
He was taxed on 150 acres in Montgomery 1795 (Seed-bed of the Republic, by Douthat).
