MEADE A. IRBY DEAD
Passed Quietly Away After A Brief Illness
Mr. Meade A. Irby, a well known and highly esteemed citizen died after a brief illness at his home at Vernon Hill at an early hour Tuesday morning. He was about seventy-eight years of age and is survived by his wife and several children, among them Mr. R.T. Irby and Mrs. S.W. Dunn of this place and J. Irby of Vernon Hill.
Mr. Irby was a native of Halifax his entire life. He was a zealous Christian and for many years an active member of Vernon Hill Baptist Church. He was a loyal and public spirited citizen and leaves to his children the priceless inheritance of "a good Name" which Soloman said: "is to be more desired than riches".
In the 80s Mr. Irby was an ardent worker in the Good Templar organization and was a leading spirit in the Vernon Hill Lodge, which erected a handsome hall at that place, not being able to secure a suitable place for meeting, the church declining to allow the Lodge to meet therein. He was a noble, warm hearted Christian gentleman, whose loss in the community in which he lived will be deeply felt.
Mr. Irby was an old Confedeerate Veteran and also a member of the Masons. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place at his residence yesterday and his remains were laid to rest near that of his son, A.M. Irby, whose death occurred in San Francisco. Cal. Sept. 1st.
A Record of Service of Meade Adams Irby, Vernon Hill, Virginia
Meade Adams Irby, son of William Morgan Irby and his first wife, Mary (Polly) Tune Irby, husband of Amanda Tanner James Irby, enlisted in a volunteer company in 1861. This company, under the command of Captain Young, was known as the Mount Vernon Company. He served in this company several months until he became ill and unable to continue his service. As soon as he was able he rejoined his command and remained in service until the war ended in 1865.
The following incident is quoted from one of his war experiences: "On March 8, 1864, I joined the Catawba Troop, known as Captain Collins Company. The Black Walnut Cavalry and said Cavalry formed squadrons. The first engagement was in the Wilderness near Fredericksburg with Sheridan's Army. Our company was known as the third Virginia Regiment. Our time of service was in the Valley of Virginia. After being there for some time we fought a hard battle under the command of General Stuart. During the battle General Stuart was fatally wounded near "Yellow Tavern" and died short time later. After he was wounded he came up to our company to rally our men. Despite his serious wound he rode across the field in his usual way, his appearance in no way indicating his physical suffering. This action was perfectly typical of this man of brave, fearless life whose last act was a supreme effort to save that country for which he died."
