Biography

James was born about 1758. He was the son of Peter Irby and Elizabeth Cook. James was most likely born in Halifax County, Virginia, as his brother David attested that he himself was in his Revolutionary War pension application. James, his father, Peter, and brothers, David and Francis, took the Oath of Allegiance in 1776. In 1781, Thomas Faris gave a sworn statement that James served as a sergeant in the expedition of the taking of the Illinois while in Captain John Montgomery's company (Virginia militia) under the command of George Rogers Clark. [1] Captain Montgomery’s company joined Clark in June of 1778. The Virginia government made payment to the administrator of James’ estate for his lost rifle/gun in May of 1779. [2] Based on this information James most likely died between the summer of 1778 and spring of 1779. According to credit entries in James' Accounts Current, James' brother Francis received payments for his wages in the Kentucky Expedition and the Illinois Expedition.[3] James is memorialized on the wall of Danville/Pittsylvania County Veterans Memorial.
