John was born in 1914, the son of John Benjamin Ireland and Catherine Ferguson.

John was a Canadian-American actor and film director. He was a supporting actor in several Western films such as My Darling Clementine (1946), Red River (1948), Vengeance Valley (1951), and Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957). He was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in All the King's Men in 1949. He played other movie roles including a supporting role in Stanley Kubrick 1960 epic, Spartacus. He was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to the television industry.

He married Elaine Sheldon.

He married Joanne Letitia (Lacock) Haymes on 07 Aug 1949.^[1]

He married Daphne M Cameron on 22 Jul 1962.^[2]

He passed away in 1992.^[3]
