Jane Isaac was born on 12 Feb 1786 in Fareham, Hampshire, England, daughter of James Isaac (1760 - >1795) and Mary (Mannings) Isaac (~1757 - 1807).[1][2]
Her siblings were:
Jane died on 12 Feb 1786 in Fareham aged 1 day.[3][4][5]
Contrary to the record of death & burial, a descendant of one Jane Isaac claims that this Jane was her 3 x great grandmother who did not die shortly after birth, but instead lived to bear two children. To quote descendant, Gabriele Eilert-Ebke, "Her surname didn’t change because she was not allowed to marry Andrew Cleeves, father of her two illegitimate sons William Cleeves (*1808) and George Cleeves (*1811)". Gabriele adds, quote, " Jane Isaac as daughter of James and Mary Isaac (Mannings), currier in Fareham, the poor woman, who was not allowed to marry Andrew had to give away her sons" end quote. Viz. the children were put up for adoption.
According to Gabriele Eilert-Ebke, the churchbook of St. Peter and Paul in Fareham, the primary source, does not provide any entries relating to the burial of Jane Isaac on 12 Feb 1786. In fact, there are no records of a Jane Isaac having been buried in Fareham from 1775 to 1825. Therefore, all other data stems from secondary sources, which are likely to contain errors. Baptism of Jane Isaac
The records for baptisms at St. Peter and Paul in Fareham from 1775 to 1825 give only one other entry for a Jane Isaac and it is therefore simply not the case that a number of children named Jane Isaac were born in Fareham in 1786. The other person is Jane Bolton of James and Elizabeth (Betty) Isaac, baptised twice (which happened), on 2nd October 1784 and again on 20th March 1785.
Andreas (Andrew) Cleeves was born in Hanover in 1778 of English descendants (his great-grandfather Joseph Cleeves from Salisbury came to Hanover, Germany, in 1718 to build the Great Fountain in Hanover-Herrenhausen, King George I’s palace and garden. Napoleon’s troops occupied the Electorate of Hanover in 1803 and he consequently fled to Portchester, where the King’s German Legion was then based. He was an officer in the KGL-artillery. He got involved with Jane Isaac and there, the story began to unfold.
In the Fareham directories for 1792 James Isaac is given as ‘currier’, a profession of some importance for the artillery, their horses, saddles, boots, etc. More than likely Andrew and Jane met at her father’s workshop, since he was a keen horse rider and an expert of things made of leather for horses, esp. saddles.
Note: There were a number of children named Jane Isaac born in Fareham and adjoining towns in Hampshire during the same year (1786).
