During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company C of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 20 years old, single and working as a hostler when he enlisted on 14 February 1863 from Hudson, New York. Discharged due to disability on 30 June 1864 from Black Island, South Carolina.[1]
