Biography

Maja Jansdotter was the eldest daughter of crofter Johan (Jan) Persson in Romhult and his wife Elisabet (Lisa) Hansdotter. She was born in May 1779 and baptized Maria.^[1] In everyday life she usually went by "Maja" (as most of her namesakes).

In her youth she served at different places, coming home to live with her father and stepmother "between jobs".^[2] However, she was married in Svennevad parish, not in Hallsberg, so at the time of her marriage to Samuel Adam Jansson, in 1804, she will have been economically independent of her father (who was probably very poor at the time).^[3] The young couple at first lived at Hunnebergstorp.^[4] Samuel Adam had just been accepted as a soldier for Deje, which will have been what made it possible for them to marry.

Maja had a long life together with her husband. In their old age they lived at the croft Hagalund in Bo parish, which they had acquired after his retirement. Maja Jansdotter died at Hagalund in May 1846.^[5]
