Biography

Dessie was born on July 29, 1904 at Cordell in Scott County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Pleasant Jeffers and Pennsylvania Jeffers . She married John Lindsay Newport on April 25, 1923 in Scott County, after his death in 1924 she married Thomas Burress on May 10, 1925 in Scott County. After the death of Thomas in 1959, Dessie married Fetterman Phillips on April 27, 1967 in Scott County. She passed away at the Scott County Hospital in Oneida, Scott County, Tennessee.

Obituary,

Dessie Burress Phillips, 68, of Huntsville passed away at the Scott County Hospital Saturday after an illness of ten months. She was the daughter of the late Ples Jeffers and the late Pennsylvania Jeffers. She was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church. Survivors, Husband, Fred Phillips of Huntsville, three daughters, Mrs. Lois Williams of Dayton, Ohio, Mrs. Eldora Jeffers of New Lebanon, Ohio, Mrs. Delvene Bridges of Rt. 1, Huntsville, five sons, J. L. Newport and Tommy Burress of Plymouth, Michigan, S. T. Burress of Clinton, Tenn., Theodore Burress of Huntsville, Ervin Burress of New Lebanon, Ohio, three step sons, four step-daughters, one brother Charlie Jeffers. Funeral services were conducted from the Fairview Baptist Church 1 p.m. Monday with Rev. Vaughn Burress and Rev. Harold Dean Ross officiating. Burial followed in the Fairview Cemetery.
