Biography

Clementine Jersey was born in Manchester, Lancashire, England on April 30, 1828.[1] She was the first daughter and third oldest child of Francis Jersey and Ruth Rishton. As the child of an itinerant preacher, with changing geographic assignments every year or two, Clementine therefore lived in her childhood in numerous locations in northern England and even Ireland. In 1841, she was recorded at age 13 on the England census in Crosby Garrett, Westmorland, with her parents and all living siblings except her oldest brother[2]

In 1842, the entire family, including 8 living children at the time, took the decision to move to Canada.

On Sept. 18, 1849, Clementine married Prentice Jenkins in her father's home church in Stanbridge East, Quebec[3]. Clementine was 21 years of age and the first of her siblings to be married, with her older brother William to be married a year later, to the sister of her husband!

The couple went on to have 10 children over the next 20 years:

  1. Byron Henry, b. 4 July 1850; d. 28 June 1911
  2. Marcellus Francis, b. 8 June 1853; d. 18 May 1883
  3. Prentiss Augustus, b. 18 July 1857; d. 16 Nov. 1920
  4. Eva Livilla, b. 10 Nov. 1858; d. 20 July 1881
  5. Irvin, b. 9 Nov. 1859; d. 18 May 1900
  6. Azro Alexander, b. 9 Oct. 1861; d. 29 Nov. 1940
  7. Margaretta Clementine, b. 30 June 1864; d. 19 Nov. 1886
  8. Mary Catherine Ann, b. 20 March 1866; d. 12 June 1903
  9. Ernest Lyman, b. 10 Dec. 1869; d. 20 April 1950, and
  10. Arthur Lee, b. 26 Nov. 1871; d. 23 Aug. 1877.

Prentice was a farmer and the family's primary place of residence was Stanbridge East, except for a short period in Potton after Clementine's parents moved there. Clementine together with Prentice appeared on the 1851 census for Stanbridge East (with one child Byron).[4] They were recorded with their 5 oldest children on the 1861 census in Potton,[5] then on the 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses back in Stanbridge East.

All ten children were recorded on the 1871 census.[6] Seven of the children remained with their parents at home on the 1881 census.[7] In 1891, Clementine and her husband were living with their son Azro.[8]

Clementine passed away on July 13, 1893 at the age of 65. Prentice survived her by another 14 years.[1] Clementine is interred at Harris Hillside Cemetery in Stanbridge East (her husband is at Chapel Hill Cemetery).[9]
