Maria Louisa Jersey was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England on Oct. 9th, 1836.[1] She was the fifth daughter and seventh child of Francis Jersey and Ruth Rishton. As the child of an itinerant preacher, with changing geographic assignments every year or two, Maria therefore lived in her childhood in numerous locations in northern England. In 1841, she was recorded at age 5 on the England census in Crosby Garrett, Westmorland, with her parents and all living siblings except her older brother[2]
In 1842, the entire family, including 8 living children at the time, took the decision to move to Canada. In 1851, Maria appeared with her parents and 9 siblings on the Stanbridge Census.[3]
On Aug 26, 1856, Maria married Abel White of Potton in her father's home church in Stanbridge East, Quebec.[4] Maria and Abel had 5 children together between 1858 and 1873, namely:
Maria, her husband and two oldest children were recorded on the 1861 census for Potton,[5] then on the 1871 census with their four oldest children.[6]
She passed away in 1874[7]. It is thought she was interred in either the Mansonville Protestant Cemetery (where her husband rests), or at Chapel Hill Cemetery where her parents were interred and where she has a stone.
