Clara Matilda Jersey was born in 1853, the daughter of William Jersey and Philura Jenkins. Her birth date is recorded on the 1901 Census, as referenced below. She appears in both the 1861[1] and 1871,[2] censuses in Potton with her parents and siblings.
Clara married John Gilman McCoy in 1878.[3] The couple settled in the Province Hill area of Potton. They had a single child that died very young:
Ada Rachel, b. 15 Jan.1883; d. 15 April 1883.
As a result, Clara and John appeared alone on the censuses of 1881,[4] 1891[5] and 1901 (as far as children are concerned).[6] In spite of the lack of children, the household in 1891 included John's father Alphonso and John's brother Ulysses.
The couple continued to live in Potton, where they were recorded on the censuses in both 1911[7] and 1921.[8]
After Clara lost her husband in 1936, she would close her house for the winter and live with her brother Rob in Mansonville village. Then in 1939, she sold the farm and moved into the village into a tenement owned by Harold Clark.[9]
She passed away "very suddenly at her home on May 6 (1941), at the age of eighty-seven",[10] and was interred beside her husband in Owls Head Cemetery, Potton, Quebec.[11]
