Three different first names. Polly from Brenneman Book but could it be an occup a waitress in a tavern. Mary in Keith Nonemaker rand Anna in 1850 Census.Searched Johnson's in Conestoga tax records. There were three in early records disappeared by 1793.
7-02 Found info from tombstone in Gerberich. Dates of birth and death from this. Also discovered there is a second wife Anna. Mary died within a month of the birth of Rudolph (jr).
9-02 Questions who is a 'Johnson' ? Mary or Anna or both. Have been thru Martic and Conestoga searching for Johnson and Johnston. cf above note. Searched census and tax records.
1810 CENSUS. Jacob in Lampeter with two daughters consistent with age of Mary and Anna. Jacob in Conestoga six in family. This is a black family ages not broken out. John Johnson in Martic two daughters consistent ages.
1820 Conestoga no census. Martic has a John Johnson but illegible.
1830 CENSUS a young Samuel Johnson is starting a family in Martic. In Conestoga a Mary Johnson is heading a large family - 7 others, all these others were born before 1820. Also a family headed by a John Johnson w wife and 9 others. These two families could be the family of origin.Rudolph Hess and his young family also in Conestoga.
MARTIC TAX David Johnson on rolls 1803-1807. John Johnson (Johnston) appears 1805, last appears1809. Sarah Johnston appears on the Poor list in 1815 w/ two children John 11 and Hannah 9 (making bef 1806- Anna's d on tombstone is 1806.) 1818 lists a John singleman and Sarah w dau Ann. 1820 no Johnston on Poor List. Thru1820's no Johnston's. Two John's and a Samuel in 1831.
CONESTOGA TAX (in future wish to go thru again.) 1810 Jacob Johnson on roll.
PEQUEA Breth in Christ Cemetery - Rudolph and both wives buried also buried a Jacob Johnson b 1818.
1850 Conestoga Census oldest dau is a Mary.
E&E lists Jacob(blacksmith), Benjamin (wagon maker) and James in Conestoga c1830. Various conjectures as Mary being dau of Mary in 1830 census.Wife Anna being dau of Sarah on Poor List. If either correct then could not be sisters which is an assumption I would want to make. Custom for a widowed spouse to marry an unmarried in-law.(If sisters than Mary would be on the Poor List or Anna on the census being over 20.) Too many conjectures to say anything at this time. Will leave as received using first wife as Johnson who could have also been known as Polly Another possibility That Jacob Johnson buried in same cemetery with Rudolph and his wives be the brother of the Johnson woman.(I think a good assumption.) If this is the son of the Jacob in Conestoga 1810 the Johnson woman is black.?.
!07-03 Will of Jacob Johnson d 1825 and subsequent study of deed books proves that Mary (Polly) is wife of Rudolph Hess. Polly(Mary) is her mother. Receives eventually 240.60 from fathers estate in 1844. Precedes mother in death.Deed Book Lancaster County A - 7 - p123 she signs name as"Mary." Also Z-6-225 the name of Polly also used in this document. 1
