There were two women named Angeline. One was born a Johnson and the other was born a Gilkison/Gilkerson. Both were born about the same date. Both lived in close proximity.
Angeline Johnson, age 4 born Kentucky, resided with her parents in Greenup County, Kentucky in 1850. [1]
Angelina Johnson was age 14 in the 1860 census for Boyd County, Kentucky resided with her parents at Catlettsburg. [2]
Clouding her identification is the fact, Angeline's widowed mother Isabelle appeared on the census in 1880 in Wayne Co., WV living next door to the household of Cumberland Adkins and his wife Angeline who shared the same birth year, age 32 born 1848 in Virginia.
Since from census we know Isabelle and William Johnson had a daughter Angeline born about 1846 it was easy to surmise that Angeline Adkins maiden name was Johnson and therefore was their daughter. However, Wayne County, West Virginia marriage records show Cumberland Adkins married Angeline Gilkison 26 Feb 1868. In addition, census records show Cumberland Adkins was age 4 in the 1850 for Wayne County, Virginia and resided with his parents Harrison and Sarah Adkins. Living next door was the household for John Gilkison and his wife Nancy J. and their one year old daughter Angeline. [3] [4]
Thus unraveling the census records disclosed we did not know what happened to Angeline the daughter of William and Isabelle Johnson but we see Angeline might also be known as Mary A., born about 1846 or 1847 in Kentucky according to the 1880 census which also shows her parents were born in Virginia.
What was her real given name? The marriage record has Mary J. while the 1880 census has Mary A.[5] Her age on the marriage record (age 18 born 1847) is another consideration in establishing her identity and family connection. A big clue is Eliza Johnson the witness on the marriage record who would be the older sister of Angeline (aka Mary A.) Johnson. Pondering all these clues leads us to believe we have Angeline, the daughter of William Johnson and Isabelle Deal. For whatever reason it appears when she married Angeline Johnson began using Mary or Mary A. for her name. (She did have a much older half sister named Mary.) All this seems vague and circumstantial until we consider one final clue, DNA. A descendant of Mary A. has a match with a descendant of Ambrose Johnson, the brother of William Johnson whose daughter was Angeline.[6]
Very little is known about her. She married in Boyd Co., Kentucky and her full name was Mary “A”ngeline Johnson.
Let's look at the marriage record. The bond, dated February 9, 1866, shows Peter Wells was bondsman for William G. Smith to marry Mary Johnson in Boyd County, Kentucky. The marriage license and minister's receipt are dated 11 February 1866. The license shows Mary Johnson but the minister wrote her name "Mary J. Johnson" perhaps the error causing so much confusion in her identification. At the time of her marriage Mary Johnson was 18 years old and born in Greenup County, Kentucky. Her parents were born in the US. The couple were married in Boyd County, Kentucky at the home of Joseph F. Crain, "A Preacher of the Gospel of Christ". Witnesses to the event were: Andrew Diles, Catherine Crain, and Eliza Johnson.[7]
She passed away about 1888 in Missouri.
