Biography

David Johnson purchased 75 acres on Whites Creek (also known as Mill Creek) from James T. Watson on 12 August 1837 and then sold the same tract to Smith Cyrus on 28 June 1841. The second deed mentioned boundaries with Smith Cyrus and a corner to William Johnson. The location and boundaries offer proof of David's relationship to both the Cyrus and John ("Monie") Johnson families.[1]

He married Emily Cyrus (daughter of Smith Cyrus and Crescia Kane) on February 12, 1839 in Cabell County, Virginia.[2]

The 1840 census of Cabell County, Virginia shows two David Johnson's were enumerated. The David (age 15-20) who married Emily Cyrus would be this one on p 27: David Johnson 1 m 0-5, 1 m 15-20, 1 f 15-20 [3] His identification is proven because listed on the same census page and living a few farms away (thus showing the location for these families) were Mrs. Jonathon Booth, James Ball and Hiram Blose. Cabell Co deeds confirm this assessment. [4]

The other David Johnson was age 20-30 in Cabell Co 1840 census. [5]He married Cynthia Hazlett. Living near them in 1840 was Mrs. Mahaly Hazlett, the mother of David's wife Cynthia. [6]

The David Johnson who was the husband of Emily Cyrus, was the David Johnson, age 29, Farmer, who died Nov 1849 in Wayne County, Virginia according to the US Census Mortality Schedule.[7][8]
